Commissioner blasts cable operator

Joined by Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell blasted Comcast Corp. for putting the league's television network on a paid tier in its cable package. Goodell was not happy that Comcast cost the league, in the NFL's estimate, nearly eight million homes in viewership. "We have one cable operator close to here, which has taken us from nine million homes to one million homes, and that's a significant difference," Goodell said after a day of league meetings at a Center City hotel. "They have the right to put us in nine million homes. It's not a matter of negotiation. It's just a decision they made. "We're confident the consumers want to see it." Goodell did not point the finger only at Comcast. The league has had issues with Time Warner Cable, which will not carry the NFL Network.

Can't we also blame the NFL for this? They're the ones who just HAD to put games on THEIR NFL Network. They took the games out of my home first, now they're upset that TimeWarner won't carry it. I'm ticked off more at the NFL for this, than I am at TimeWarner. Greedy assbags.

Everyone should just get DirecTV and put an end to cable companies!

October 24, 2007  07:08 AM ET

Thisandthat, this is identical to the situation going on between Comcast and the Big Ten 10 network. The Big Ten will not allow Comcast to put it's network on a paid tier, thus no Big Ten. So people in the geographic area of PA, OH, MI, IN, IL, WI and MN are not receiving the broadcasts. I would bet that's at least 8 million, probably more. It has turned into a big advertising blitz between Comcast and BTN, newspapers, TV and probably radio.

October 24, 2007  07:19 AM ET

I have to agree with thisandthat on this one. I have Time Warner because they can offer more services to my home just by using one company. If I get Directv then I have to pay someone else more money for my internet service if I don't carry their cable service. NFL are the greedy assbags that came up with their own channel and then tried to make as much money as they could off of it so screw the NFL. If they were really concerned about how many homes they reach and if the fans are gettting what they want then they should have made it more reasonable for all companies to handle broadcasting their station instead of trying to strong arm people with their childish advertising bashing of companies that refuse to pay millions to put in on the airwaves. So I miss, what, maybe a dozen games a year or so that they televise on the NFL network? Half of those I wouldn't have watched even if they weren't on the NFL network so as far as I'm concerned the NFL can take their special little channel and keep moving. I mean what did they think would happen? You charge cable companies millions of dollars to carry their channel. Did they really think those cable companies wouldn't pass that cost on to the consumer?

October 24, 2007  08:35 AM ET

FOX, CBS, NBC and ESPN show as many games as i can possibly watch; i don't need to pay extra for games i don't care about anyway. Cox Communications also added the NFL network to a sports tier that costs extra per month.

October 24, 2007  08:40 AM ET

Fans in local markets see the games anyhow. Regardless, cable sucks. I have heard terrible stories about DC area Comcast. Cable just cornholes its customers, but in a sense, I agree with Tribe on this one: cable offers more bundled services at a better rate.

October 24, 2007  08:43 AM ET

Sounds like both parties are greedy bast#rds who cannot work out a compromise.

October 24, 2007  09:11 AM ET

Amen AAARedskin....we're the poor **** in the middle of a money hungry tug-a-war.

October 24, 2007  09:23 AM ET

All of them are sticking us in the you know what. I have Directv and they are just as bad. I have to pay around 250 bucks to get the games plus 100 bucks to get the HD games. And each year the price goes up and up. Now I already pay extra for the HD package but that doesn't cover HD football games. All of them are the same.

October 24, 2007  09:28 AM ET

We were greedy and disloyal to our fans first! How dare they take the same approach we did? It isn't fair to the fans!

Anyone see any sense in that at all?

October 24, 2007  09:29 AM ET

The commiss. is wise.... can I get an "Amen"?

October 24, 2007  09:33 AM ET

Sue them! (DC)

October 24, 2007  09:42 AM ET

wow. like the greedy chimp with a handful of food, trapped in the hole, unwilling to release the food, it dies.

the nfl understands why cable operators won't pay their fees without putting them on another tier. cable companies are refusing to raise their base package cost for all customers just so the nfl can charge the most money of all basic cable channels.

the only one not respecting the fans here, is the nfl for thinking its fans are so stupid, we can't see through their PR smoke screen

October 24, 2007  09:46 AM ET

I had the NFL Network for free last year...this year I had to pay for it. Upsetting all the way around. I've never liked comcast and thier dealngs but I do hope the NFL has enough pull to at least drop the pay to watch

Mmm.. beer reference. I'll give ya an Amen!

October 24, 2007  10:04 AM ET

Doesn't COMCAST own Time Warner's cable company? So they cut the channel on both. How is this not a monopoly?

October 24, 2007  10:25 AM ET

I finally coughed up the 2.99 extra per month for 6 months, because I can't live without NFL network. I'll just drop it when the season is over. Done and done.

October 24, 2007  10:43 AM ET

I think it's hypocritical of the NFL to cry about every cable and Sat company NOT carrying the NFL Channel in it's standard tier service, and then continually sign exclusive rights of an NFL package to one Sattelite service.

On one hand, you want to promote the NFL internationally and gain exposure, but then you want to sell full game coverage to the highest bidder.

If you don't have DirecTV and you don't pay almost $400 for the NFL package, you better live in the hometown where your favorite teams play. Otherwise, you won't see them play ever week.

How about opening up full coverage options of all games on Pay Per-view at least? Or Let every cable and Sat operator carry a version of the DirecTv NFL package?

October 24, 2007  10:54 AM ET

The NFL is hypocritical! NFL Sunday Ticket is exclusive to only one tv operator (DirecTv) yet they want their network on all tv operators? Never mind the NFL threatens fans with local tv blackouts as well. How about this - offer NFL games to all tv operators and offer more packages than just the ridiculously expensive Sunday Ticket (like, single games, single weekends, or "Follow Your Favorite Team" option for those not in the local market where their team plays). Really, if they didn't put late season games on their network, no one would even want to have the NFL Network anyway. You can find better coverage of NFL topics on other sports channels (ESPN anyone?). The worst thing they did was make viewers have to play a guessing game as to which network is carrying the game. Fox = NFC, CBS = AFC unless it's Sunday night = NBC and Monday night = ESPN. Then if it's an AFC vs NFC matchup, it goes by the away team's network unless it's your local market team. Confusing as can be! Bottom line is that the NFL is just trying to screw its fan base out of more money with the Sunday Ticket and the NFL Network.
