Hunwick deal a sign of things to come in Boston?

09:14 AM ET 11.30 | Moving Matt Hunwick has given Peter Chiarelli some roster space, but he'll likely need more soon. Chiarelli needed to clear $1.1 million in space to fit Savard under the $59.4 million salary cap, and by trading Hunwick and his $1.4 million cap hit to Colorado for prospect Colby Cohen, he did that and more, gaining $300,000 in cap space. Now he must find a way to make room for Marco Sturm, which will mean clearing approximately $3.2 million in cap space. According to multiple sources, the Bruins in recent weeks have tried unsuccessfully to move forward Michael Ryder ($4 million cap hit) and also are offering up forward Daniel Paille ($1 million cap hit). A source on Tuesday night told ESPNBoston.com that Paille may very well be moved within the next week or two, but that leaves $2.2 million that still needs to come off the books.

Ryder for a bag of pucks and Paille for some stick tape...Problem solved!

November 30, 2010  09:49 AM ET

Not sure Paille is worth the tape, GB, haha. Let Paille go for whatever draft pick you can get for him (5th-6th round?) and take your lumps for Ryder. He's playing well right now, which means losing him could hurt the team, but it also means his value is up. Unfortunately, Chiarelli will get raked over the coals for him and he probably won't be able to get much more than a 3rd round pick or something.

Trading Hunwick was smart enough, but he's got to be careful not to dump d-men for more forwards. Its defensive depth this team is weak on, not forward depth.

Ryder is just making too much money for his own good right now.

Frustrating team to follow. Their play of late has been so inconsistent after getting off to a quick start. They have a habit of falling behind quickly in games and just don't have the fire power to catch back up.

Now let me see where can Chiarelli dump an over-paid under-achieving player. Hmmm?

No hints now...I'll get it. I'm dialing the number on Chiarelli's speed dail that's listed "IDIOT." I'll let you know who answers. :-)

The other solution? Wave Rider. If there are no takers, he can join Sheldon Souray in the AHL. That'll clear cap space fast!

True, Roamer, but I think he's hoping to get someone for Ryder. There's little chance he would make it through waivers to get to Providence with the way he has produced this year. Heck, Burke might even try to take him off waivers and try to pretend it was part of the Kessel deal!

good call ...

November 30, 2010  12:40 PM ET

too bad about Hunwick - good depth guy...ate up minutes when Ference/Seidenberg/Stuart, et al. kept getting hurt last year.

November 30, 2010  12:46 PM ET

plus - the Bruins are going to have to find even more cap space when Sturm is ready to come off of IR.

Lets say Ryder is waived and then clears waivers. If the Bs then called him up, couldn't another team claim him then and only have to pay half his salary?

On re-entry waivers that is.

I think they can only be claimed on the way down, though I am not 100% sure.

Anything to improve his image which has been in the crapper since that Kessel deal.
