Despite just two games of managerial experience at any level, Don Mattingly insists he is prepared to skipper the Yankees. "I'm 100 percent ready in my mind to do it," he said yesterday on a conference call with media. Mattingly revealed that he came out of retirement four years ago to become hitting coach with the specific intent of managing. "I wouldn't have come back just to do the hitting," he said. "I knew it's what I wanted to do."

I thought he wasnt ready
like a week ago

October 24, 2007  08:56 AM ET

He probably has to say it... If he is back as the lead man for the job, he better not leave any doubt, especially with the ny media

October 24, 2007  09:21 AM ET

not only that, but he probably didn't want to say that he was ready or that he wanted the job in case they brought Torre back.

October 24, 2007  09:22 AM ET

If the Yankees pick this guy, they're headed in one sure direction.

October 24, 2007  09:32 AM ET

he might not have the experinece as Girardi, but he's one the most respected guys in the game. You think Torre held the team all together on his own...it's a collective effort from all the other coaches, he just gets final decsion.
good luck donnie baseballs

"doodoo brown"

That is just divine.

Did you do some "doodoo?"

What a naughty boy.

I suppose it's wise not to tax the imagination too heavily.

Every morning, Don Mattingly gets up out of the wrong side of his bed full of hats, tripping over the open umbrella into a broken mirror, and waits for the herd of black cats to finish crossing before he walks under the ladder over his front door.

October 24, 2007  10:44 AM ET

Mattingly was not jinxed, he had a bad back and a surrounding cast of characters that couldn't get it done. his only playoff series in 95 he hit .475. He changed his swing from HR power to doubles power in order to play a whole or more of a season. I do not see how a guy who gave so much to the team could be called jinxed.

October 24, 2007  10:46 AM ET

He might be ready but how is he going to handle the media pressure if the Yanks get off to another slow April start?

October 24, 2007  11:02 AM ET

I think he took a class at Queens College....so he's ready now

October 24, 2007  11:07 AM ET

Great pic. "Aw shucks, I love you, boys!" That or he is getting ready to fire a force bolt at the cameraman. No wait, he isn't Dr. Doom...my bad.

October 24, 2007  11:11 AM ET

He looks like a really sad Elvis Impersonator...

October 24, 2007  11:22 AM ET

Well, this upcoming year for the Yankees is certainly going to be hilarious.

bull____ please, say something that actually means something.
what a bozo.

October 24, 2007  11:51 AM ET

I love Mattingly as a Yankee player legend, but Yankee fans like me are going to be wishing for Torre back. Bet that.

boo

October 24, 2007  11:58 AM ET

I hope the transition is smooth, but my heart says the team is going to miss Torre, bad.

The Truth the joke could have been funnier if you said Lehman College for they are actually the CUNY school in the Bronx.

You gotta be a native to know that, though.

October 24, 2007  12:06 PM ET

So is Hostos...but any joke using them could be seen as culturally insensitive so I'ma keep that one to myself.

Nice pic indeed. Hal and Hank think they can put a pretty face for fans since they are so ___ looking. Cashman is too smart and trying to convince seasoned coaches to help Donnie out to save his behind.
