08:18 AM ET 12.03 | Though it has been reported in the Bay Area that a significant offer has been made to Adrian Beltre, he might be more interested in returning to the Red Sox. [Beltre said Wednesday night] that he could sign a deal "right now if I wanted to." But the free agent third baseman is waiting to see what other options open up to him and maintained that his preference is to return to the Red Sox. "I got used to seeing that park full in the first inning and still full in the ninth inning. I liked that atmosphere," he said during an exclusive interview with the Globe. ... "I liked playing there and I want to be with a contender."

I don't think the Sox are going to try to sign Beltre. They will play Youk at 3rd this year and sign a stopgap 1st baseman like Derrick Lee for 1 year....in the meantime they will try to get Adrian Gonzalez.

I think that the Red Sox would like to have him back, but nowhere near the money that the A's are reportedly throwing out there.

Sox offered $52 million, 4 years, right?

That's the contract that VMart received from the Tigers. I'm not sure the Red Sox have offered Beltre anything so far.

Sox are probably treating Beltre as a 3rd priority behind Werth and Crawford.

I wouldn't sign this guy beyond 2 years. He only plays well during his contract year, when he's got something to prove. If they sign him long term, I hope he's heavily incentive-laden. by the way, they should have gotten Adam Dunn. Oh well.

With Dunn going to the White Sox, maybe the Red Sox will pursue Konerko and move Youk to 3rd.

I think the A's are probably the only team to make him an offer so far. He turned them down before last season for more money than the Red Sox paid him so it doesn't seem like he's to anxious to play there.

Sox have been quiet so far - it'll be interesting to see where this all falls out...Beltre or Gonzales? Crawford? Werth?...good to see Varitek in place for next year.

Theo is in love with the idea of possibly acquiring Adrian Gonzalez. He will gauge the situation in SD and try and go that route, before even thinking about Beltre.

Beltre is just trying to jack up his price. If he wanted to stay with the sox he would NOT have declined his option. If he is confident he can produce at the same level as last year, he should have just stayed put, then cashed in next year or sign an extension. is Boras his agent

Could not disagree more. The logic you are using is exactly what Beltre and Boras used last year. Get a one year deal for good money --> perform exceptionally well --> Cash in. There is no point in trying to do all of that again, they are exactly where they want to be and will cash in, likely to the highest bidder.

His option that he turned down was for only $5M. Why would he accept a 1 year deal that pays him half of what he made last year?

Exactly. That was never going to happen. People talk about the Red Sox being quiet so far, but we haven't heard much from the Angels either, who supposedly are contenders for both Crawford and Beltre.

Beltre has said all along, he would prefer playing on the west coast, so he would be closer to his family. If that's the case, then the Angels should have a big advantage if they want him.

Maybe now that V-mart isnt there to touch his head, he'll come back!

That drove him nuts! It was always funny to see.

How come there's no one at SI to block this ****?

December 3, 2010  10:31 AM ET

will the Sox even make an offer?

I don't think they will, if they think they have a chance to get Adrian Gonzalez.
