Giuliani irks Yankees, Sox fans

Rudy Giuliani has declared he will be rooting for the dreaded Red Sox against the Rockies in the World Series, which began last night. From the Bronx to his childhood haunts in Brooklyn, there was a baffled anger bordering on rage. "They should burn his seat that he sat in at Yankee Stadium -- how's that" said George Patsin, a Brooklyn restaurateur. "They should burn it on TV so I can watch." It would seem that the timing is particularly galling to the faithful in New York. Bad enough that Joe Torre, the manager, is gone. Bad enough that half the team might follow. But Rudy cheering for Pedroia and Ortiz? It was, in short, too much.

At least Rudi isnt dead. did you guys hear about that mob plot? scary stuff

October 25, 2007  08:18 AM ET

I have nothing except this to say about Rudy Guiliani: He is a manipulator of the facts and of the impressions of his own reality.
The Providnece Journal asked him last July: "If the devil said you can be President if you become a Red Sox fan, would you do it?"
His answer: "I'm a Yankee fan. I always believe its a sign of my being straight with the peole, about not wanting to fool them..." "Probably that's a deal I could not make."
Now since he is in New Hampshire and he needs the people to like him he panders and caters to what he believes is their rooting interests. he wants to be seen as one of them. So I guess loyalty and "not wanting to fool the people" and "being straight with the people" goes out the door when it doesn't suit your needs, eh, Rudy?
Be forewarned: Be afraid, be very afraid.

Who doesn't pick another team to root for once your own is eliminated. Those from your own league are the normal choices.

Good Grief!

October 25, 2007  08:33 AM ET

Why is this a story?!?!? A politician changes his mind to boost his visibilty ... big freakin' deal!

October 25, 2007  08:36 AM ET

I know this sounds kind of stupid, but the fact that he is cheering for the Red Sox is scary in terms of the fact that he could become President. If you're a Yankees fan, so what. I don't think people will say, "Well, I was going to vote for Guiliani, I like his policies, but he's a Yankees fan, so I'll vote for somebody else." Maybe I'm just nieve, but who you root for generally does not translate too much into amount of votes. Now, the fact that he chose to root for his hated rival looks just plain weird. If he can change his mind about something like this and totally contradict what he said in the past, what kind of President would he be? Probably a lot like the one we have now.

The whole point is that Rudy changes his colors more times than a chameleon. Now, I didn't just fall off the old turnip truck yesterday. [Maybe the day before. :)] I know (1) by defintion politicians are liars and (2) politics does make strange bed fellows but maybe what we need in this world today, are people who are proud to say what they mean and mean what they say.

October 25, 2007  08:56 AM ET

It doesn't matter.....Rudy is a BUM. He has gained popularity during the evens of 9-11. All New York uniform personnel hated him as mayor. He when down to Ground Zero and took a couple of pictures that played on the emotions of the moment.

October 25, 2007  09:16 AM ET

Didn't Rudy have all the homeless people in NY killed when he was mayor? Or was it street performers? I forget, but if he is willing to sell out the Yankers and it bothers them that much, then he can't be all bad.

October 25, 2007  09:22 AM ET

Real fans do not root for their dreaded rivals.

PERIOD.

October 25, 2007  09:22 AM ET

FLIP FLOPPER

October 25, 2007  09:25 AM ET

Imagine this scenario, October 2008, Yankees and Sox are in the ALCS, Rudy is the Republican nominee, I don't think the NY fans will be too kind.
And if the carpetbagger Billary is the Democrat nominee, we could have a perfect storm in the playoff and election.
Please stay out of our ballparks, you hacks.
GO SOX!

JFK Jr. may have been an interesting choice, but for the small matter of ending up in an ashen pile of aeronautic rubble.

October 25, 2007  09:45 AM ET

he's a joke to people in NYC anyway.
a quite calculated cut and run strategy.

October 25, 2007  09:59 AM ET

Let's see how many groups Rudy can alienate.
1. His ex-wives
2. His children
3. New York Firefighters and Police Officers
4. Yankee Fans
5. Red Sox Fans

No wonder he has to pander to the Christian right.

Nor, I, Rudy, Jr.

October 25, 2007  10:01 AM ET

Whos a joke JFK or Rudy? :) And well put, hyper. See we can agree on something after all. :)

October 25, 2007  10:06 AM ET

And pk: sound advice: Stay out of baseball you jerks. In fact all of you BS people who manage to steal the spotlight, stay the hell away from our game and let us fight among ourselves the way good fans are supposed to fight. We do well enough on our own without your added incentives.

October 25, 2007  10:08 AM ET

I like how this story was on the front page of every newspaper in the tristate area and in a small caption....Raging Wildfire Consumes Southern California, 900,000 evacuated....I guess we all know which is more important...

October 25, 2007  10:09 AM ET

So he decides to root for another American League team in the Yank's neck of the woods. The Yankees would be more flattered by a Red Sox win than a Colorado win if you follow six degrees of separation logic. The Indians should root for the Red Sox too. If the Sox win, the Indians may look like the second best team in baseball.
