Calhoun critical of new coach rule

Posted: Thursday October 25, 2007 06:34AM ET

Jim Calhoun, long one of the most frenetic sideline presences in college basketball as the coach of Connecticut, managed to keep his seat yesterday while discussing restrictions upon his ability to roam and speak freely. But just barely. At one point, amid a defense of his actions, Calhoun questioned whether the game might soon be coached by robots. The NCAA has declared that bench decorum will be a point of emphasis this season. That means officials will penalize coaches who step outside the coaching box and those who engage in unsportsmanlike actions, including the use of profanity and abusive language.

So the NCAA doesn't want you charging out onto the court and swearing at officials while making wild hand gestures. Why would anyone have a problem with this? Be a good role model and set a good example for your young players.

I read the Times article, and all I can say is that these coaches are the biggest whiners.

Rick Pitino on having to play 2 more conference games:
"We all know high seeds go to the Final Four, but how do you get a high seed when you???re playing this many conference games?"

Ummm, win your games? Pretty easy to figure out Coach.

Typical NCAA ... more interested in image (and corresponding dollars) than anything else.

Brian Bosworth was right about the NCAA.

Bobby Knight better get ready to forfeit his whole salary.

Report Offensive Comment

Gee, the NCAA wants to uphold a standard or morality for their basketball coaches? Whats the problem Calhoun? This may be a free country, but your gutter mouth has no place in earshot of the courtside fans so zip it.

Report Offensive Comment

shut up! sit down!

where have I heard that before...

Report Offensive Comment

This is a stupid rule. A lot of coaches get out of their seats, and yell to motivate their players. It's not about intimidating the refs.

The NCAA goes too far sometimes.

Is Miss Manners now running the NCAA? ---

I think if you politely raise your hand to ask permission to leave your seat and with the ref's permission, you walk slowly to courtside, you should be able to do this. And then once at courtside, you can rip the ref a new one -- and then walk slowly and politely back to your seat., and if you are Bobby Knight and you'd rather stand, you can just throw the chair across the court in case any of the other coaches on the opposing team would like a seat.

Now, isn't that much better?

bad rule. regardless, we're probably gonna have another mediocre season this year. meh.

Report Offensive Comment

Lawless are they that make their wills their law.

Report Offensive Comment

Don't have a problem with profanity and abusive language. Don't the officials have enough to watch now without worrying about whether the coach is in his "coaching box" or not? All this does is empower those officials who care about drawing attention to themselves instead of allowing the kids to be the show!!! We watch NCAA basketball to see the talented kids; not the referees!!!

Report Offensive Comment

I guess they were bored and needed to make a new rule.

Report Offensive Comment

Yeah! They have to justify having their jobs. They have to make a rule change or two to let people know they're around. What's wrong with the game the way it is????

If you've ever watched Lute Olsen on the Arizona bench, you'd know why the NCAA has to do this. When opposing teams have the ball on his end of the court, he stands on the corner of the court, INBOUNDS, and effectively takes that part of the court away from opposing teams. When his team is down there with the ball, guess what, he stays far away from the court. It's intentional, it's never called and it affects the play on the court. His team will have a 6 point swing, at least, when he can't do this anymore.

I've always wanted an opposing coach to get his largest reserve player and instruct him to just plow Olsen over when he's on the court during their possession. Now, the NCAA will knock him off the court, which is almost as good.

If you've ever watched Lute Olsen of Arizona, you'd know why this rule was necessary. When the other team has the ball in front of his bench, he stands in the corner of the court, INBOUNDS, the entire time with his arms folded. His presence tends to take away that entire corner from opposing teams, limiting their usable court which makes his defense have to work less to defend less court. Of course, when his team has the ball in front of his bench, he's far away from the court.

It's intentional, it's never called and it's cheap. I've always wanted an opposing coach to substitute for his largest reserve player with strict instructions to take out Olsen with a hard charge to his groin to teach him to stay off the court. Now the NCAA has finally acted, so it's almost as good.

Different coaches have different personalities. Let them each do their thing.

cassidy--- as a lifelong UCONN fan-- no one can understand what Calhoun is saying --- I imagine his wife even has trouble with her Calhoun to English translation--- so a no cursing ban wouldn't do anything since he is completely unintelligible.

His own school is critical of him. Butt-puppet.
