Tom Watson was a star of the 1970s, when he won Masters and British Opens, and now at 58, he still is a star, if of a different variety, competing against others his age as well as against memories. The Charles Schwab Cup Championship begins today at Sonoma Golf Club, the 30 best players on the Champions Tour, once known as the Senior Tour, playing for what in effect is a dual prize, first place in the 72-hole tournament, worth $440,000, and first prize in the year long Cup competition, worth a $1 million annuity. Loren Roberts leads the cumulative scoring in the Cup points race, with Jay Haas second and Tom Watson third, and Watson has it all figured out. "If Haas finishes a solo fourth and Loren Roberts solo eighth, and I win the tournament, I win the Cup."
