Alex Smith took all the snaps with the 49ers offense in practice Wednesday for the first time since separating his shoulder a month ago. Unless Smith experiences a setback today or Friday, he will start Sunday's game against the Saints.

THe only reason he didn't play last week is because the Giants were coming to town.

Oh! Them 69ers! (DC)

October 25, 2007  10:59 AM ET

Alex won't fix the problems in San Fran.

I'm so excited, Smith is one of my favorite players! I just hope he isn't rushing back too soon!

Smith may not fix the problems in SF, but at least with his mobility he won't get killed in the pocket like Dilfer was.

He's a bust but its funny how nobody will say it!! Chad Pennington, Rex Grossmen, Leftwich, Linehart, all have been thrown under the bus, but good ol Alex keeps escaping it!!!!

I'm not so sure he's a bust but he shouldn't have been drafted like he was a savior to a franchise. Coming out of that powerhouse Mountain West Conference do we really buy that junk that he was ready to start for an NFL team as soon as he did? Nah.

October 26, 2007  01:04 AM ET

San Francisco still has a team?

October 26, 2007  09:38 AM ET

Smith is only 23 years old, this is his 3rd year in the NFL (still the youngest starting QB) and the NIners are on their 3rd Offensive Coordinator.
The term "bust" would seem a bit pre-mature.

I agree, Renegade. He certainly hasn't been a guy you would be proud to have chosen first overall to this point, but there are lots of other problems surrounding him, including the revolving door Offensive Coordinator position. It was looking at the start of the year like Norv Turner was going to get fired and could come back to the NIners again, but that may not happen now. In the meantime, Alex has to learn yet another offensive system, and his RB isn't running this year like he did last year. Gore must not have healed completely from the pre-season injury or something, because he surely doesn't look like he did last year. Smith is ok - he's not knocking any Pro Bowl doors down, but he's only going to get better as things around him become more stable. I'd take him ahead of all the guys named by MacaDamien, I can tell you that much.

SMITH? lol.... what a waste... long -time niner fan here.. clear back to the days when steve spurrier was our qb.. but just like jerry rice rice said " he isnt the qb to lead us back to glory days.." smith was the product of a system... not a number one draft pick qb. we should take some thoughts towards getting another qb next draft. maybe a new coach... all that money spent and we still dont know how to win....it is funny though... every time we pay our rb's big-time contracts before the finsh exsiting one... the next year they sit back and relax.....go figure....
