Crawford market nearing $180 million?

08:16 AM ET 12.06 | The big winner in Jayson Werth's signing may be Carl Crawford. Crawford is seeking a contract of up to eight years in length, and many felt something in the range of about $17 million a year, or $136 million over eight years, would be enough to sign the dynamic Tampa Bay left fielder. But after the Werth signing, there is speculation that Crawford, 29, might now be seeking something closer to $180 million over eight years, which is what first baseman Mark Teixeira got from the New York Yankees two winters ago.

A slightly above average corner OF who is 31 is hardly Werth 7 years 126M. Crawford is a much better olayer, so he'll get more than that.
This is one of those contracts ht really jacks up salaries...because he's getting superstar money when he's nowhere near a superstar.

I doubt that...it would have been business as usual...way overpaying for a player. Burnett part II.

There may not be any players for Crawford at $180 mil. He may be out there for a while.

This is a signing similar to the one the Tigers made when they signed Pudge and Miggy a few years back, the Nationals know they over paid to get him, but they had no choice in order to ge free agents to consider them they have to over pay to get them, now they need to win some ball games to get guys interested in playing there so they don't have to overspend in the future.

And once again the Yankees, who the Nats have to thank for that luxury tax money to begin with, are put in a bind with their pursuit of Crawford.

I could see the Yankees paying Crawford that kind of money if they can't sign Cliff Lee.
