09:43 AM ET 12.07 | Adrian Gonzalez questions were abundant Monday for Jed Hoyer. Asked if he believed the deal ever was in jeopardy yesterday because the Red Sox were unable to meet a 2 p.m. deadline to sign Gonzalez to a contract extension, Hoyer said, "I was pretty confident about it. Adrian was excited to go to the Red Sox, certainly. It was a place, given his swing, he knew he'd succeed." ... His left-handed swing would appear to be a perfect fit for cozier Fenway. "I think he's going to be a monster in Fenway Park," Hoyer said.

I thought they failed to sign the extension because they were going to save cap money by signing him after the season starts.

I've never been for a salary cap, but I agree with you. This is getting old. Something needs to be done.

Increase the revenue sharing with a floor.

That is key...you can't give these bottom-dwelling owners money that they just put in their pockets. It should be a requirement that any luxury tax money be spent on payroll, and if there ever is a salary cap, there must be a floor as well.

If nothing else there definately needs to be a floor... hell we saw earlier that even the Pirates are banking...time to make them put that money on the field or sell the team.

Or put the field on the money and sell the team..any which way works really

Great trade though.

In THIS case, I blame San Diego. They had a payroll under 40M and just got rid of their best player...

There's no excuse for that

yup.

The dumbass Globe makes it sound like Gonzalez has already played a full season. Delerium reigns supreme in Boston

Agreed. Pirate fans get abused by profiteering ownership every year.

This wont matter in the long run. The Yanks are back, Ganzo may bring them CLOSE to the Yanks now, but its simply a matter of time before Yanks sign Lee and prob another top FA which puts them OVER the top. It'll be last season all over again.

Gonzo might make Boston a little better, assuming that they're losing Beltre. If they have better health this year than that's what's going to make the biggest difference. They already had a good team.

Didn't the Yankees finish in 2nd last year?

To be fair even had SD kept Gonzo this year, they were going to lose him next anyway once he hits FA. Even if SD had money, they're not going to be able to outbid Boston. So rather than losing him for nothing, they got 3 good prospects for him. Small consolation for the fans yes, but it's better than nothing.

this is why i don't like the whole idea of free agency. Marvin Miller thinks he should be in the HOF, but the whole screwed-up salary structure in baseball is basically his fault! you might as well say that Scott Boras should be in the HOF, too.

If you look at the inequity prior to FA...that is a very thin argument and/or analogy. The current system might need some tweeking though, but not in favor of the owners.
