Ex-Husker star rips fired AD

Quarterback Eric Crouch won the Heisman Trophy in 2001 while leading Nebraska to the BCS title game. But upon returning to the campus as an alumnus, Crouch said he and other former players never felt welcome around Steve Pederson, who took over as the university's athletic director in 2002 and had the job until he was fired last week. "You couldn't even get through the gate in the parking lot," Crouch said in an interview this week at his home near Omaha. "You could never talk to Steve in person. You had to get on his list. People in Nebraska are good, old-fashioned people who want to see you face-to-face." Shortly after Tom Osborne was brought in, he sent an e-mail message inviting former players to games and to his office. Osborne spoke in person and by telephone with Crouch, and ordered pictures of former stars put up on a wall.

I'm not a Nebraska fan, but I don't know how Pederson could turn his back on former players and a rich tradition. It seems like he and Callahan would gone out of their way to embrace them in order to help build goodwill while trying to return the program to its winning ways. Those two guys are about as short sighted as they come. Osborne is already doing the right things.

Callahan, your days are numbered......they are cleaning house at Nebraska.

October 26, 2007  08:31 AM ET

You would think all the recruits would hang on until they found out who the next coach would be. Most of them have more than one offer, so why jump ship?

October 26, 2007  08:48 AM ET

I also heard that Callahan ordered pictures of former All-Americans taken down. Rule # 1..never...NEVER cut ties with a successful legacy or history.

Truth, you are correct! For the life of me, I can't figure out why Callahan or Pederson would have done that. Osborne is a great symbol for the university to utilize. I hated him when he was a coach, but I am a Big Ten fan. This is one program that won't take years to turn around. Good luck to them.

Hey slipp...could you see Big Tenn (11) needs another team. Nebraska or Mizzou?

October 26, 2007  09:26 AM ET

Bring em in, One/two more great teams in the big ten, then maybe we could get rid of Northwestern or Minnesota lol....

October 26, 2007  09:36 AM ET

I'm happy to say that the University of Florida has embraced their former players in both Football (and now Basketball). They invite the former players to the games, honor them on the field, and bring them into the locker rooms to share their experience with the current players. It has done worlds of good for both the current players, and the former players.

This story is quite shocking really coming from a school as rich in football tradition as Nebraska. The way you build and maintain tradition is by embracing the current/former players and their families. Good job Tom!

It seems, all I read about Callahan does not mesh with Husker tradition. Heck, it doesnt mesh with any tradition. What has he done anyway. Did he even take the Raiders past the second round of the playoffs. It seems that he is a very proud person. Pride comes beforethe fall.... Osborne as AD or some position in athletic admin should help the recruits stay in the Husker fold. I am sure glad Reggie Smith didnt go to Nebraska... BOOMER SOONER BABY!!

October 26, 2007  09:50 AM ET

I'm happy to say that the University of Fla has no **** reason to be mentioned on this thread!!!

October 26, 2007  09:50 AM ET

I think most tradition rich progams like FL, Miami, USC, ND, MI, Ohio St, AL, UCLA (the list goes on and on) embraces their heritage and the former players. It appears that Pederson and Callahan are idiots in this department.

October 26, 2007  10:01 AM ET

Truth, I believe it was discussed years ago. Personally, I think Nebraska or Missouri would make good sense, actually better than Notre Dame. My personal choice would be Nebraska. Think about it, Nebraska, Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State, not to mention Wisconsin, Michigan State, Purdue , Iowa and Illinois. Some great rivalries and what a total population of alums all over the conference geographic area.

October 26, 2007  10:04 AM ET

Truth, it would also open up new recruting areas for all twelve schools. Nebraska doesn't go east very often and the Big Ten doesn't go to Lincoln very often. I think that would be a plus!

October 26, 2007  10:20 AM ET

Univ of Fla brings them in because their orange jumpsuits fit in with the team's uniforms.

October 26, 2007  10:25 AM ET

You need to embrace your heritage and your past. Eric Crouch was a good quarterback for the Huskers. He won a Heisman trophy and carried them to the National Title Game. If he wanted to speak to the A.D. of his alma mater, he had the right to do so.

Plus props to the Truth for bringing up Big Ten expansion. I would have to go with slipperyrock and xxx84xxx and say bring them both in, and subtract Northwestern. That would be awesome!

October 26, 2007  10:43 AM ET

I really hope they turn it around.

October 26, 2007  10:43 AM ET

I understand that Petersen was an idiot for cutting some many ties with the past, but I have no sympathy for Crouch **** and moaning about not getting special treatment because of who he is...

October 26, 2007  10:46 AM ET

xxx84 and J. Hova, you are not alone. Many people feel that Northwestern should not be in the Big Ten. The Big Ten will never oust Northwestern or Minnesota. They were founding members of this conference. I would bet that many SEC fans would like to see Vandy out. To the SEC's credit I think that they are safe, as well they should be.

October 26, 2007  10:47 AM ET

All of the personal jabs aside about UF, I was making a point. It's too bad people can't see past their own inadequacies long enough to have a decent conversation. Quit hatin' and grow up.

October 26, 2007  10:49 AM ET

xxx84xxx Get rid of Minnesota? You'll be pulling those words out of your a*s within a year after the Gophers trounce those Ohio sweethearts in the silver spandex.
