No guarantees in a Modano return

08:30 AM ET 12.08 | Wearing somewhat of a monstrosity on his right hand, Mike Modano isn't sure what the future holds after suffering a severed tendon in his forearm. Forget about centering the third line or capping his stellar career with another Stanley Cup playoff run. Modano jokes he's having trouble even feeding himself right now. Modano, whose parents, Mike and Karen, still live in the Westland house he grew up in, admits his mom was "cutting my steak" into "bite-size pieces" the other night. ... That's also why it's a bit of a stretch to make any predictions about Modano's return to the ice. It may be a question of when, not if -- or at least that's the more hopeful tone the eight-time All-Star and three-time Olympian was striking Monday. But when you're 40, and you've already had a tough time getting back into the kind of shape you need to be in to play for this Wings team, there certainly are no guarantees.

Lets hope hes okay he deserves a chance at a cup. I doubt there's a next year.

December 8, 2010  09:04 AM ET

For Willa's sake let's hope he can "go left."

Hockey players are a different breed. He suffered tendon and nerve damage and they had to reconstruct his wrist. Sure its a long season and he still might come back, but I'd be happy if I just got full use of my hand again.

He's won a cup so if this is it it ain't so bad, ya know...

December 8, 2010  10:49 AM ET

Shouldn't Willa be cutting his steak into bite-size pieces?

So, Wings players are in better shape than Stars players?

It really sucks. He was going good for my Wings too, just as I expected he would.

Great player and Captain. I wish him well...even though he's playing for the Wings now. ;)

There were a lot of Doubting Thomas's but I was not among them either.

Most of them weren't Wings fans.

I was, and still am. I wouldn't complain about having him as a depth player come playoff time, but I had no time for Modano on my team, and haven't shed any tears in any beers over his injury. I'd rather have Abdelkader in the lineup on a regular basis, and it seems like they are going to keep icing Hudler for some reason, so Modano's injury is convenient timing, in this case.

He says his mom is cutting his steak up for him, haha. Well, he's been having other people do all the heavy lifting for him for years now anyway, so what's the surprise? An icon, no doubt, but he's been mailing it in for a few seasons now, so I have no issues keeping his influence away from this team. I have no problems if he can come back and end his HHOF career with another Cup, but again, am not the slightest bit upset that he's out right now.

Yes, you have to be in better shape to play with the Wings than what has been expected of Dallas players in the past. It takes less stamina to play the Trap than it does to play a puck-pursuit style of hockey like the Wings do.

Also - someone said hockey players are a different breed, in reference to their desires coming off of injury, but this is a guy who has rarely played hurt in his career, and still has all of his (huge) teeth after 20 years in the league. I don't think he fits in with the Duncan Keiths and Ryan Smyths of the world...

Mailing it in! LMFAOROTF!!!! That a great line. I don't think I have ever heard that before!

I wouldn't mind seeing him hoist another, which also means I wouldn't die if Detroit won another Cup, I'm hoping for Abdelkader to play more myself, as I thought he was pretty good last season.

Don't call him Shirley.

I can't take credit for the line, its an oldie, but I'm glad you like it, kinger.

I'm just not a Modano fan is all. 4 Stanley Cups and the paramedics dropping his gurney are my Top 5 NHL moments...

You mean Team Geritol although maybe they should be called Team Timex cause they keep on ticking

Mom cuts up the steak Otis and Willa looks after his 'other' meat.

Or maybe you could just call them multiple Stanley Cup Champions.
