09:05 AM ET 12.10 | Trying to sell tickets in San Diego this offseason may be more difficult. If you're wondering how the Padres can expect to sell tickets after swapping their star player for three long-range prospects and a fourth player to be named later, the answer is an early harvest. By sending out their season ticket renewals in August, with more than a month left in the regular season, the Padres capitalized on a club then in first place and have been rewarded with an 87.8 percent renewal rate -- the highest in the history of Petco Park. ... If some of those ticket buyers now believe they were bilked -- that the Gonzalez trade amounts to a breach of faith -- they may not have been paying enough attention to either the fine print or the headlines.

Fans in San Diego go to the game to tailgate, drink beer and take in some rays..... and root for the Padres (in that order). There's actually a park behind the leftfield fence (that's part of the stadium) that a lot of people hang out at during the game. So, I doubt people will be terribly outraged.

Its a great enviroment inside and out, the fans love going to the games!

Now if my Indians could do something similar maybe they could get 87% season ticket sales?

Petco Park = Litter box

Go Giants!!!!

December 10, 2010  10:06 AM ET

There will probably be more tourists at the games than actual Pads fans.

December 10, 2010  10:15 AM ET

No Dodgers, no Pads, who wins this division by default?

Hoyer has been nothing if not brutally honest for some time now about the fact that the team could not afford to pay Gonzalez what he is worth when it came time for a new contract and was more than willing to entertain offers for him. Any "fan" that was completely unaware of this or simply lacking the common sense to realize that he was unlikely to play a majority of this season in a San Diego uniform deserves to be "cheated" out of his season ticket money.

A team capitalizing on the previous year's successes? WOW

agree...i caught a game there two summers ago and i think more people were outside the stadium that in....the place was pretty empty and would've been even moreso if they hadn't invited the military to take two entire sections of the upper deck....nice park, great weather...good fish tacos and a crappy team.this deal has been contrived for two years...Theo was just waiting for the right moment...i'm sure Hoyer will be working for the Red Sox in a year or two after he's fired for getting so little in return for their top player.

He got top prospects, which is the same packages that other top players like Lee, Halladay, Texiera and Santana were dealt for..........you souund like a bitter Yankee fan, just because Boston got a great plater.

Or he just doesn't think that those prospects were so tip top and the collusion between the management teams is an obvious question mark. That would really be a better answer than that Dums is bitter. Bitter about what?

I just don't think he would be so pissed if he went to anybody else. And to think there was some kind of conspiracy, where Hoyer took less than he could have gotten elsewhere is just crazy. How would that benefit his career? Bottom line is Hoyer felt more comfortable with the prospects that he had a big hand in drafting when he was with Boston. Dums acts like the Padres got raped in this deal, but those were 3 legitimate top prospects he received in return.

I think you are right that that is what he thinks.
you never can tell with prospects, clearly Hoyer has a better idea on these guys than we do.

How do you know that, nobody will till at least 2-3 years. These prospects could turn out to be great players..............or they could be duds.

well, so far, they haven't shown much...the best prospect is Kelly who got pounded in double A.

They didn't get one major league ready player...not one...for Adrian, Gonzalez...they got boned
