08:54 AM ET 12.11 | The Yankees plan on giving Jesus Montero a shot to win the starting catching job this spring, but the phenom may have to beat out a veteran other than Jorge Posada for the gig. That's because the Yankees have expressed serious interest in former Dodgers backstop Russell Martin. A source said the Bombers have made a one-year offer to the 27-year-old.

Wow, that is a slap. Martin is good for at least 30 days on the DL.

You can never have enough washed up veteran catchers.

agree, Russell Martin, weather he goes to Boston or New York, isn't going to make any difference.

Yeah, I think the Yankees have a Plan B (life w/o Lee) on the back burner, though who that could be is anybody's guess. I don't think Grienke has the stones to play in New York.

Tell them to stick that 1-year offer where the bagels don't pop out, hah hah. Wonder if the Red Sox are interested?

December 11, 2010  01:45 PM ET

If this happens then Montero to KC for Grienke?

December 11, 2010  01:50 PM ET

They want him for his versatility. He can be a backup catcher, DH or DL in equal measures.

It's always nice to let the young guys play, but look a tthe Top 100 Prospect list for any year where the players have already played out most or all of their careers and you'll find probably 15-20 guys out of the 100 who shouldn't have been traded, meaning the other 80-85 guys were at their peak trade vale before setting foot on the major league field

From what I have heard, Montero is a Victor Martinez clone at catcher...very weak defensively. Maybe they want somebody better throwing guys out considering that they already have enough offense

It's going to take a bit more than a minor league catcher to pry Grienke away from KC.

of course that's the starting point. Nova? Gardner?

Agreed. I know I'm not the first to say so, but this quote was profoundly accurate.

Or they want to get Montero more seasoning at Triple A?

December 11, 2010  05:26 PM ET

RedSox should step up and give him the standard 7/140 contract, the Yanks have showed serious interest in him after all.

December 11, 2010  08:03 PM ET

Let Martin go to the sox, with his DL MO they r a perfect fit

Well, the scouting report on Montero is that he can hit like a young Manny, but catches like a 38-yr old Posada.
