Sources: Muschamp annoyed with Mack

09:50 AM ET 12.12 | Mack Brown was really more interested in keeping Will Muschamp around to help win another national championship than he was in scripting the perfect exit. Keeping a great talent like Muschamp was a good idea, but head coaches-in-waiting shouldn't have to wait more than one year or two at the most. At least one source told me Brown had decided in the offseason to step down at the end of the 2010 season, but he changed his mind after his first losing season at Texas, worried that his legacy had been tarnished. Muschamp was annoyed by the decision, sources close to the football program have said, and chose to leave what he thought was promised him: arguably the best coaching position in the country because of Texas' enormous resources, facilities and budget and the recruiting edge that is the Lone Star State.

Duh! All coaches with big egos annoy each other. That is not really news.

It would explain a lot, if true. I certainly never expected Muschamp to leave in the first place and that must go double for Longhorns fans.

True.

That's unfortunate. Hope Brown has a backup plan or his ego could destroy the Longhorns.

Muschamp was tired of playing second fiddle. The clock was ticking on his coaching career and he left for one of the best jobs in the country. Texas will have coaches lined up in droves for that position when Mack retires anyway. No harm no foul.

Maybe he can get Carl Torbush again, they had a successful stint in NC during 1996 and 1997.

That would be a good place for Shannon. He will get another head coach job in a couple of years...

FJJ, what can I say. Wow. I never saw this coming.
So what will Gator Nation love? Hate?
I know a fair amount about his defensive philosophy, but what's your take on him as captain of the ship, not just the skipper? He obviously has the ability to relate to his players, but can he be a consensus builder or is he just rah-rah? This in my biggest concern.

Speaking as a 'Nole, I really don't care who UF's coach is as far as our program is concerned. I wasn't elated to hear about Urban retiring, nor am I worried at all about Will Muschamp being hired.
Our program is progressing just fine under Coach Fisher. Urban Meyer would not have stopped that progress, and Will Muschamp won't either. Not saying Muschamp won't be successful at UF, just that the progress of FSU football will not be slowed by Mr. Muschamp. I have no doubt that if he sticks around UF, he'll beat FSU sometime. As of right now, however, it is he who needs to worry about FSU, and not the other way around.

FSU does look better. Guess it is nice to have a lot of confidence EWO. Problem is things can fall apart in a hurry.

Shocked? Yes. I figured Foley would be flying around the country for at least a couple weeks.
Bummed? Only because I was liking the idea of getting Mullen back. Our offense really needs a swift kick in the arse.
Psyched? Yup. New blood is always exciting. Recruits like to see a new coach since that coach will be around for 5 years or so. And I saw how "mellow" Urban was on the sidelines this year. It's difficult to change your personality and still remain on top of your game.

A healthy does of "worry" motivates the players. I wouldn't relax too much.

Damn, I'm not trying to come off as being arrogant, but apparently that's what it sounds like.
The confidence that I have is simply that Jimbo has us headed in the right direction. Nothing more, nothing less. The comment about Muschamp was kind of a response to FJJ saying that FSU shouldn't be firing up the bong just yet. I'm not firing up anything in anticipation of any kind of dominance.
I'm just happy that we have a coach that I believe in. I'm not predicting ANY kind of championships or winning streaks, or anything like that. All I meant was that I believe that the success of our program will be determined from within, and not from anything outside the program.
Nobody knows better than this 'Nole how quickly things can fall apart. I watched my beloved Seminoles go from 14 Top 5 finishes in a row, straight into "The Chris Rix Years" and all the horror that followed.

I doubt that our players are "relaxed." Far from it. We are hungry again, and that gives me hope.

I am neither worried, nor a fool. I'm not predicting championships. I'm just happy to see my team headed out of the dark...as I'm sure you will be once Texas gets back to their winning ways...which shouldn't take long at all.

Chill FJJ. I understand your frustration over Texas' current shake-up, but I don't think our players, or fans, need to be warned about resting on our laurels. We haven't accomplished anything other than FINALLY notching a win against UF again.
Christ, can't a guy be happy that his team is doing a LITTLE better? You guys are a tough crowd :)

Not to insult, but I am damn worried every Thankgiving weekend regardless of FSU/UF's record. Not sure how you aren't worried every year...

I don't see UF as being in disarray at all. They just had a coaching change. I think everybody knew they'd get a top-flight coach, and they did.
As for Miami, THAT program does appear to be somewhat messy right now, but I'm not silly enough to count out the 'Canes...ever. Too many painful losses to those guys to EVER take them lightly.

I try to stay plastered that whole weekend. It either helps fuel the celebration, or drown the pain :)
