A-Rod's price may be $400 million

08:44 AM ET 10.28 | It would not be out of the realm of possibility that Scott Boras could ask for about $40 million per year over 10 years for Alex Rodriguez. If that's the case, the Yankees will be out and Rodriguez will go to the open market, where the Red Sox could become a player. The Sox, however, likely would not pay that type of money, and if they don't it's likely nobody else would, either.

Too bad A-Rod isn't worth the money he's being paid NOW!

October 28, 2007  09:28 AM ET

Now I think he's taken this insanity to another level. I wouldn't even talk to him. I've been all about the $30M figure for 5 or 6 years, but this is over the top. Anybody that will go past 30 can have it. I'm out.

October 28, 2007  09:33 AM ET

Is anyone as dumb as Hicks to make another mistake like this? 30 million should be the limit for a guy who was by his own admission "still pressing" in what was his best season as a Yankee. I would like for him to stay.

If you don't like the pitch, take a walk. If you don't like the Yankees pitch, take a walk.

The Yankees will be just fine without you in the long-term and maybe the West Coast will suit you. You can "press" all you want over there and no one will care.

Take the money and run.

The Price for A-Rod
A-Rod who cares how old he is or what regular season #'s he puts up if he doesn't hit in the playoffs what good is he?? Unless their are some significant financial incentives in his contract for the playoffs why shouldn't he just shut it down like he always has down after the regular season. He is the next Peyton Manning or Dan Marino here & that is Playoff Chump!! The price for 1 ARod equals the price for Manny + D Ortiz combined something just doesn't add up here: you have 2 studs in the regular season & playoffs & then you have A-Rod a regular season stud but a postseason dud. I think that I wouldn't put all my eggs in one basket here if I was the Yankees. I mean honestly for 30mil/yr you could probably sign an ace pitcher & a star outfielder instead. The money should be spent on pitching not a ChumpA-Rod, if the Yankees do they will continue w/the madness of giving players large contracts only for them to age & falter on the Yankees dime. I see the Yankees failing to win another WS for the next 7 yrs. Who knows maybe the curse that the RSox had no falls on the Yankees!!
A-Rod 30,000,000+ (W/this much going to one guy the Yankees will continue to suck!!)
Manny Ramirez $17,016,381
David Ortiz $13,250,000

October 28, 2007  09:49 AM ET

I wonder if ARod would take less money to play in Chicago w/the Cubs & his former Mgr. Lou Pinella??

October 28, 2007  09:52 AM ET

400 Million is crazy and I like Arod. Thats the price of a new stadium way too much for one guy

October 28, 2007  09:54 AM ET

If the Yankees & new Hal Steinbrenner played "hard ball" w/Torre why cannot they play it w/ARod. Boras will come in w/his charts & #'s projections of how ARod will put up 40 HRs & 120+ RBIs for the next 10 yrs & so on & so forth. But, after that goes down the Yankees should put up that ARod has never won a Gold-Glove @ 3B, & his dismal playoff #'s & this should help the Yankees bring the 40Mil asking price off the table the Pay scale for Manny & Ortiz is only 30Mil & they play regular season & postseason something ARod doesn't know anything about. ARod knows about one thing getting his "money" & screw the team outside of me, myself, & I.

A-Rod destinations: Chicago Cubs, NYY, Boston Red Sox, SF Giants, LA Dodgers, LAA, Texas & that's it.

October 28, 2007  10:19 AM ET

No way do the red sox play. lendaleusc06 is right. The sox have a great core of young players, more reasonably priced veterans (Please keep lowell) and more likely are going to look at signing Youk to a deal. Take a look at what has transpired in the playoffs, guys like Youk, Pedroia, Ellsbury, and MBM, Drew etc. coming up with clutch hits. A-Rod is a great player, who just doesn't have a postseason makeup, he wilts when the moment arrives. He's not worth what he makes now, why pay more?

October 28, 2007  10:21 AM ET

I would offer him a 4 year/100 million contract. And if he passes on the offer, I would tell him to "go play for someone else, and show THAT TEAM as well how lousy you are in the POST SEASON!"

October 28, 2007  10:26 AM ET

There is no way the Yanks, or any team for that matter, will give him $400 mil. I just hope the Yanks stick to their guns and let him walk if he opts out. I don't care if they suffer next year without him, no player is worth that much money. I know NY can spend that much but its just a setup for failure to give one guy that much dough. He can barely handle the pressure as it is in NYC. The press will be all over him if he starts making $40 mil a year. That is just a joke.

October 28, 2007  10:37 AM ET

a-rod is a plague onto himself. however, the real root of this problem is that **** of an agent he's got. boras is a plague onto baseball and all of its fans.

October 28, 2007  10:47 AM ET

From what I understand, the Yankees are prepared to give him a take-it-or-leave-it blockbuster extension .

Boras doesn't want A-Rod present for the negotiations. I think he's doing his client a disservice by just chasing dollars (that probably don't exist; note to Boras.. Cashman *isn't* bluffing.) instead of what the player may actually want.

If A-Rod opts out, Boras is going to find that the market isn't what he thinks it is, and if he tries to shop him back to the Yankees, the offer will be $30M less than the extension (the ammount of the Texas subsidy).

October 28, 2007  10:49 AM ET

This is utterly ridiculous.

October 28, 2007  10:51 AM ET

..and Scott Boras can ask whatever he wants.

..and GMs around the league can also fall over and die laughing.

October 28, 2007  10:52 AM ET

40 Million for a slouch like A-Rod? A post-season disaster in the waiting? And let's not forget he's 32, which (with or without 'roids) is the beginning of a decline for players. His best years are over. I just hope the Orioles don't throw a bone for this dog (Bora$) to fetch.

October 28, 2007  10:58 AM ET

**** Rod should go. If the Yankees or anyone else pay him that much they deserve to go bankrupt and then straight to hell. Of course I wouldn't mind if the Yankees team plane crashed into the Redsox team plane as they were travelling over the Patriots practice facility during a Tuesday morning practice but that's me. Wave good bye to a guy who folds like cheap luggage in the post season and grow your team in AAA. At least the Rockies made it to the Series this year. Pitching is the only thing to break your bank on in baseball. **** Rod should hump Jeter one more time then go to San Fransico or one of the L.A. teams and count his KY covered money.

I hope, now this is nothing against a-rod, but I hope that no one is willing to pay that much for him, because no matter how good he is, i dont think any athlete is worth that much.

October 28, 2007  11:38 AM ET

Just because he asks for 40, doesnt mean hes getting it.
