When Alex Rodriguez agrees to meet with the Yankees, he can expect to receive a four- to five-year contract offer that, combined with the three years remaining on Rodriguez's deal, will increase his average annual salary of $25.2 million. The Yankees were receptive to agent Scott Boras' request for a meeting but they insist Rodriguez attend the sit down, something the Yankees believe Boras is advising Rodriguez not to do.

hes not worth 30 mill

October 28, 2007  08:26 AM ET

Some reports out of New York say the new deal gives him about 28.5 million per year. The difference between that and 30 million, over 4 years, is 6 million dollars. That's quite a bit of money, but considering how much he's already made, he may just want to get back to New York for sentimental reasons.

It's sad that he'll never attain the same status as Jeter in that city, although he's a much better player.

Here we go again. His salary this year was $27,708,525. Now you want him to take a pay cut? Boras is nuts, but so are the Steinbrenners.

October 28, 2007  10:02 AM ET

Of course Boras knows that ARod is weak & can & would back down & agree w/the Yankees, but Boras wants to & isn't afraid to be the villian in this story so that's why he is willing to take this contract to the highest level possible something ARod has had to feel the pressure for the last 7 yrs.

If ARod signs back w/the Yankees or doesn't opt-out the Yankees dissent will continue. The Red Sox have youth the Yankees have age!!

Maybe Tom Hicks can bid against himself and offer $50 mil per for ten years.

Dylan:

You say you love me
And you're thinkin' of me,
But you know you could be wrong.
You say you told me
That you wanna hold me,
But you know you're not that strong.
I just can't do what I done before,
I just can't beg you any more.
I'm gonna let you pass
And I'll go last.
Then time will tell just who fell
And who's been left behind,
When you go your way and I go mine.

Bye Bye A-Rod

Yeah lendale, Cano, Melky, Joba, Hughes, Kennedy, and Wang are real old. Try again.

October 28, 2007  12:40 PM ET

While I don't completely agree with lendale, there's no denying the Yankees are fairly old.

C: Posada, 36
1B: Giambi, Doung Mientkiewicz , 33, 36
SS: Jeter, 33
3B: A-Rod, 32
LF: Hideki Mastui, 33
RF: Bobby Abreu, 33
DH: Johnny Damon, 33

That's 7 regulars who are in their mid-30's or very close. Compare that to the Sox, who will have only 3 regulars at the age of 32 or over next year (Varitek, Manny, Lowell, assuming they resign Lowell).

Now the Yankees rotation is very young (Wang, Hughes, Kennedy, Joba), but if they want to compete 4 or 5 years from now, they're going to have to start infusing some young talent into that lineup. Cano and Melky are good, but they're pretty much the only Yankee players in that lineup that I think will be effective 5 years from now.

Besides A-Rod of course.

October 28, 2007  01:43 PM ET

Ortiz will be 32 next year.

October 28, 2007  05:15 PM ET

its giambi's, abreu's (if the pick up the option-which they will), damon's, and mussina's last year next year...plenty of money will be freed up to make the necessary moves...

October 28, 2007  08:48 PM ET

A-ROD will go to the Yankees for one reason. Not because he gives a rat's #$% that he likes NY, not because he feels loyal, but ONLY because no other team in their right mind would be even close to paying $30 MILLION dollars per year for one player, especially one in his 30's. A ROD is a great hitter now, but he won't be the same in 5 or 6 years

October 28, 2007  10:38 PM ET

Going , going gone. SI says he will opt out.

October 28, 2007  11:50 PM ET

Well, the Yankee's can't make A-Rod an offer. It's up to Bill Gates, if this report in eTrueSports is accurate.

George Steinbrenner, principal owner of the New York Yankees, has decided to donate the team and all its assets to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. "It's better to give than to receive," said Steinbrenner.

SOX SWEEP ROCKIES!!!!!! (or have I already said that?...)

October 29, 2007  08:57 AM ET
