Funeral leads to Wood signing with Cubs

07:15 AM ET 12.18 | Jim Hendry was certain on Friday that Ron Santo was looking down and smiling on the Cubs. After the re-signing of reliever Kerry Wood became official, both Wood and Hendry agreed the deal wouldn't have been consummated had the two not gotten together last week at Santo's wake and funeral service at Holy Name Cathedral. "Honestly, it probably wouldn't have come up," Wood said during Friday's press conference announcing his one-year, $1.5 million deal. "We just kind of saw each other." Wood and his wife Sarah briefly spoke to Hendry at the service, then had what Wood called "a quiet conversation" with each other afterwards. They decided a return to the Cubs was a priority, no matter what the financial implications were. Wood had three or four offers, he said, but was waiting for the Cubs.

One has to respect this guy wanting to play there despite being offered more money elsewhere.

But then again, there is a real positive to going to the Cubs. There is absolutely no pressure to perform or win. They have been accustomed to being the worst franchise for so long that no one really cares about how bad they suck.

This is a good signing for the Cubs. It really fortifies their 'pen.

Lame. Seriously with this lame crap called Cub-dom. Who gives a crap? Wow. Congratulations. You're the most inept franchise in all of sports and are guaranteed every year to win absolutely NOTHING. Enjoy yourself, Kerry. Relive something that happened over 10 years ago. Keep living in the past in that dump called Wrigley.

Marshall, Wood, Marmol. A very solid back end. And Marmol's control is indeed frightening, but batters are constantly bailing him out by whiffing at his pitches in the dirt.

Too bad they're usually down by 3 by the time the back end of the 'pen is due up.

My prediction: now that Wood is back with the Cubbies, his arm problems will return.

Despite signing Kerry Wood and Pena, the Cubs are still not a contender. They are still only an average team.
