Urlacher's arthritis news to Bears

For a man suddenly given to abrupt, biting answers, Brian Urlacher had a lot to say to Jay Glazer of foxsports.com, the Web site the Bears middle linebacker has chosen for direct communication with fans. Urlacher told Glazer that he does indeed have "an arthritic condition in his back," but won't be undergoing surgery to correct it unless a disc bulges or busts. Bears coach Lovie Smith didn't seem pleased that Urlacher decided to talk about the injury.

I thought his back was fine? Isn't that what you were screaming about a few weeks ago, Brian? Maybe the 'roids make you forgetful.

October 29, 2007  07:24 AM ET

Oh yeah blame the back now that your play sucks, Urlacher has always been overrated to me an now you can add AVERAGE at best.

October 29, 2007  08:03 AM ET

geez, this time last year this guy was the greatest player in the game (defensively anyway) now you guys are jumping all over him. Fairweather fans, I guess. Its been a rough year in Chicago, and the team has been mostly overwhelmed by the expectations everybody had for them this year. Call it a throwaway, its close enough, and we'll see how he does next year. Can't call a guy done because he's had a rough first half of a season and his back is ailing.

The defensive tackles are not what they were last year. Without them the guards and tackles are able to block Urlacher. The Bears had to let Tank Johnson go, no argument there. They are thin in the defensive line.

Go CAnada

I'm not a Bears fan but I do think he is/was overrated. To me he received a lot of his praise because of the other guys Chi had on the line, that made it look like he was a beast when really he was benefitting from others around him.

October 29, 2007  09:22 AM ET

As I've posted before, this guy is an animal. Played on all kinds of different units at UNM and has been a tackling machine in the NFL. His body has been abused from his playing style and it's starting to break down on him.

October 29, 2007  09:32 AM ET

first you fools were saying that the bears didnt need briggs...then you said that tank johnson wasnt that good....and now that your boy has hit the wall...you say its because they dont have tank?...man steroids have the same effects on everyone....he's always been rather one-dimensional to me....never a great shredder of blocks.....much overrated...ask anyone outside of chicago who they think is the best alltime LB...you wont ever hear his name mentioned....now he has a back injury....sounds like the beginning of the end ...to me

October 29, 2007  10:10 AM ET

He is needed and a huge part of this team. He has had great years but probally is seeing his final stretch.

October 29, 2007  10:49 AM ET

For the last time, the Bears most certainly do NOT miss Tank! They do, however, miss Ian Scott and Alfonso Boone, who they also let go during the offseason. Those guys were great back-up tackles who could start if you needed them to, and could spell the starters when they needed a breather. Both Scott and Boone are having fine seasons elsewhere...

But, yes, Urlacher is hurt mostly by the poor play of the Bears D-Line. They are not getting it done this season.

wow, thats pathetic.

October 29, 2007  11:01 AM ET

I get the occasional arthirits flareup in my massive haunches..nothing a little papaya juice can't cure

October 29, 2007  11:22 AM ET

Is it just me, or does is look like he just took a bite of a $hit sandwich in that picture ?

October 29, 2007  11:27 AM ET

He's looked like that all season...

October 29, 2007  11:51 AM ET

The guy has been out of sorts for the last several weeks. This conditioni, which I believe is manageable, but not curable, explains his up and down play, but also his sour attitude. The guy's got the burden of the defense on his shoulders, the team is losing - the defense is in fact a shadow of what it was - and he's probably blaming himself. On top of that, he gets this. I : don't think it's an excuse: it's demoralization.

October 29, 2007  12:20 PM ET

I hate to hear anything about injuries like this, especially something that can affect your career. He has been in the league 8 years now, so this could really affect him, he's been such a dominant player for so long you hate to see any injury potentially shorten someone's career.

October 29, 2007  12:39 PM ET

I think it's funny how he talked trash about the Lions before their first game and then they gave up 34 points in the 4th quarter. Now they loose again to the Lions and his back hurts. Urlacher is overated and always has been. He's a good player on a (former)good defense. He got his name out there by diving on every pile and stupid announcers think he's the greatest. He's good but overated.

October 29, 2007  01:24 PM ET

So, by diving on piles you can get credited for almost 1,000 career tackles? Wow. You would think a lot more players would try this little trick.

October 29, 2007  01:32 PM ET

he's not over-rated at all, but his team obviously was before this season started. He's done nothing by produce since his first down in the league - how can he be over-rated? No, he's not the best of all time, and anyone who thinks he is is wrong, but he's been the best over the last few years, and at worst the 2nd best in the league throughout his career, behind only Ray Lewis. The fact of the matter is, he has never taken it easy on a tackle in order to make his body last a bit longer, so this kind of wear and tear is going to happen. Linebackers don't last forever - you don't see 40 year old LBS anywhere. His body is starting to feel what he's been doing to it, is all. Funny how the pain isn't quite so bad during a winning season though...

October 29, 2007  01:33 PM ET

Please. I love when know-nothings try and posit that Urlacher is over-rated. You know the first thing about a rated player. He tackles from sideline to sideline and is a threat on every signle play. If he is so over-rated, why do teams consistently plan their offense around his abilities?

As I say every time the jealous fans of other teams cry over-rated...that's great I will take him on the Bears over-rated and all...all day long.

Hey Crafty whatever,
Take a look at the films before you criticize: they don't lie. The guy is fast, smart and tough. He makes mistakes, mainly overcommitting. When he's on his game, he is the best middle linebacker in the league - better than Ray Lewis or Zach Thomas and on par with Junior Seau in his prime (although never as intense). Get your facts straight before you characterize the guy as "jumping on every pile": this guy not Defensive Rookie of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, an All Pro and five time Pro Bowler for nothing.
