Tubby luring recruits to Gophers

People in the know are surprised that Tubby Smith has been able to recruit as well as he has this early at Minnesota. Carter, 6-11 Ralph Sampson III, 6-10 Colton Iverson and 6-4 Devron Bostick of Southwestern Illinois already have made this a top-10 recruiting class, and if Smith is able to land Ajax, Ontario, 6-2 prep point guard Devoe Joseph with his final tender, he'll have a top-five class. Also, if Smith can get the two top Minnesota high school juniors, 6-6 Royce White of DeLaSalle and 6-5 Rodney Williams of Cooper, as expected, Minnesota legitimately could be considered a Sweet 16 NCAA tournament-caliber team within three years.

Good for you Tubby. Finally, maybe one of the local teams can leave Loserville, USA

October 29, 2007  09:18 AM ET

He lures them...then eats them whole....hence...he is Tubby

October 29, 2007  10:24 AM ET

First time in a while I'm starting to feel encouraged about the Gopher hoopsters. Still withholding judgment, but this is more than Monson ever delivered.

October 29, 2007  10:50 AM ET

What would be awesome is if Tubby takes Minn to the dance and beats KY.

October 29, 2007  11:03 AM ET

Ya wouldn't it....SIGH

October 29, 2007  11:04 AM ET

Tubby is going to bring them in.

Tubby has a lot to sell.
Big Ten
Big City with a few more things to do than Lexington, KY
The Barn - Rick Majeris calls the Wrigly Field of college basketball.
20 fortune 500 companies within 20 miles of campus.

October 29, 2007  12:31 PM ET

Tubby will win immediately.

October 29, 2007  12:54 PM ET

Good Luck, Tubby ... from Lexington, KY.

Not so sure about those selling points, though ...

October 29, 2007  01:38 PM ET

What will 20 Fortune 500 companies have to do with some kid who is coming to play baseketball? When was the last time you saw a kid choose Duke because they have a good district attorney?

October 29, 2007  02:04 PM ET

The Tubbster will create a little excitement for the Gophers...the Big Ten will be interesting this year...

October 29, 2007  02:15 PM ET

Don't see the Little 10 as a selling point.
I've enjoyed all of my visits to Minnesota. I live in a Little10 city right now, and if I get tickets, I'll make you a nice sign when you come to visit, Tubby. Keep up the good work.

Tubby only one won title in his career. and last i checked all those players were from Rick Pitino's recruiting classes, not his. Anyone who thinks he will be a success in Minnesota, need only look at his career with the Cats and countless letdowns in regular season and the NCAA tournament. Pretty much every UK team he coached after the first championship team were underachievers. He had the pull of the winningest college team in all of sports and still couldn't bring the top recruits in to UK, and if he did they were usually wanting to transfer in the next year to somewhere else. So the point is, even if he gets these guys he is supposed to get for MINN... It doesnt change the fact that he wont be able to coach them and will prolly ruin them or force them elsewhere in the next year or two. GOOD LUCK minnesota fans. You will need it.

tough to appreciate a guy who did nothing in 10 years and was handed the only title he ever got by the previous coach. yeah I know... I'm just being bitter, but i really feel that this is one coach who has been terribly overrated almost his whole career.

October 29, 2007  05:01 PM ET

Now let's see if Brewster can have this kind of success.....

October 29, 2007  06:30 PM ET

"Nothing" in Kentucky is still better than what the Gophers had under Monson. And frankly, the idea that he has a top 10 (maybe top 5) class underway is pretty impressive for this place. All I ask of Tubby is to get the program respectable before he retires. Anything above that is a bonus.

Of course, I reserve the right to raise my expectations if he does better than expected.

October 29, 2007  07:34 PM ET

Good luck getting to the dance. You'll need it with the slouch you have coaching your team. I've heard this 'Top 10' recruiting bull before, about 4 years ago. Look how that turned out. Tubby can not develop the talent he gets, never has, never will (especially big men). Tubby is not a good coach. He deserves to be at a small time school like Minnesota where he will fit in and people are happy with being just mediocre. He just couldn't handle the big time of real college basketball.

Tbird, your list is inaccurate. I believe what you meant to say was the Little Eleven (Big 10 + 11 Teams = Not 10) and that Lexington is a far better place than Minneapolis. I've been to the Twin Cities and I would pick Lexington, with it's rolling hills, basketball tradition and suburban style over that turd farm of an urban jungle you call Minneapolis anyday of the week. Oh and if 'The Barn' is the Wrigley Field of basketball, which is fiting since it's home to a bunch of losers, then Rupp Arena is Yankee Stadium.

TalonC'z,
That's fabulous. Minnesota is a cold sterile replica created in a Sims game by someone who clearly hates the inhabitants.
Tubby is a nice guy but he is a one dimensional coach. There is no flexibility in his approach to the sport. He would have been a great coach 25 years ago when it was a grinding game and the level of athleticism was scant.
If he pulls athletes to Minnesota he should get bonuses.

October 29, 2007  09:34 PM ET

Lets see. 10,000 lakes or 10,000 piles of cow patties. Four Pro sports teams or Wildcat Basketball? Sorry southern boys, but if you poll most you would find there is more to offer in a major metro area. Nice try.

You can have your college basketball. It ranks #6 or #7 in sports interest level in Minneapolis & St. Paul. That is why we don't treat basketball like a life or death situation.

Good for Tubby i still can't believe we let you get away and i wish him the best of luck in minnesota i hope he has great success
