08:40 AM ET 12.20 | One of the more memorable fights in some time had its Round 2 over the weekend. You just knew this was going to happen Sunday night when the Los Angeles Kings visited the United Center. After Blackhawks tough guy John Scott pummeled, bloodied and essentially rearranged the face of the Kings' Kevin Westgarth last month, the two went at it again during the first period, with Westgarth holding his own in the rematch.

If at first you don't succeed...get the crap beat out you again.

"Westgarth holding his own in the re-match."

Wow...scintillating story. Next time he might even come out with a tie!

This game was on WGN last night. I tuned in and after P1 I forgot it was on. Found myself watching Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure and the NFL game.

Too bad I missed a fight.

December 20, 2010  10:52 AM ET

He's no Probert.

December 20, 2010  01:48 PM ET

Remember when a rematch between fighters mattered? Probert v Domi II. Probert v Clark, etc. Now its these guys. Also-rans. Probert, Domi, Clark (especially) were all key parts of their teams that played regular shifts yet could give anyone a tune-up when needed. Now you have to choose one skill set or the other. Boogard and Stortini are major examples of this. And the fighters who CAN also play are few and far between. Especially guys considered to be truly tough guys and not just moonlighters like an Iginla. In fact, its a REAL short list - Chris Neil. Feel free to correct me, but I can't think of any others right now. And no, I'm not of the opinion that Aaron Asham should be on the list, no matter what you Flyer, and now Penguin, fans think, haha.

December 20, 2010  02:04 PM ET

Yeah the list of guys who can fight good and play well enough to be at least on the third line is a short list. If Lappy was healthy i would add him to the list with Neil. I'll be thinking about this for the rest of the day.

December 20, 2010  03:19 PM ET

Carcillo? Not sure how good he's playing these days. Or how much he's fighting. same could be said of Downie in TB, but he's more lunatic than fighter I think, ha. Rypien in Van City would be one if he were a little less complicated upstairs, but he's not as good as Neil.

How bout that Evander Kane kid? He's a decent player and i haven't seen too many of his games but he beat Matt Cooke like a gubment mule. That was soooo good to watch i got that bookmarked. I watch it whenever i'm feeling blue and bam, perked right back up again.

December 20, 2010  03:53 PM ET

Kane looks like he could end up being the new Iginla, but he's more of a player who can fight than a fighter who can play, in my opinion. I thought the same of Corey Perry till the Datsyuk incident, haha.

He was on my good list for beating Matt Cooke ...
and agree, he can play... There is still a lot of hockey to be played, but ATL seems to be hanging around ...

Barely.

It's so long ago that it's hard to recall exactly when it was.....

Two faves of mine were Eddie Shack and John Ferguson. I still recall a front page sports section photo of the two of them going at it. Fergie had Shack by the throat and was choking his with his left and Eddie had his right thumb in Fergie's left eye. Beauty!!

I love that! One shot, and down he goes, and almost out on a stretcher!!! HA!!!!

Jeebus Hank, didn't realize you were THAT old! Were newspapers on parchment back then?

Remember Tony Twist blowing up Rob Ray's face? Awesome, awesome fight. Actually was out at Troy Crowder's old hockey camp over the wknd (a friend of mine's family bought it for a family camp - they're Italian, need lots of rooms for kids). Made me think of some of his beauty tilts. There's a guy who doesn't get enough mention when you talk about fighters from that era. Crowder could toss 'em with anybody.

And remember the lead-up to the rematches? It was always an important game for the team too, not just a big deal because Kordic and Probie were playing each other. The LEAGUE was jacked for those match ups. Now, its web pages trying to squeeze out another article on a non-story. I would never have heard of either of these 2 guys had this site not given their 2 fights the kind of coverage they should try to give actual MMA fights or boxing matches.

Agree. I didn't see that fight, but I do remember the good ole days of Clark, and Probert!

I'm currently trying to entice my 50% American/Canadian son that hockey is the best sport, one in which you can fight, and still play later that game! He loved the 87 CAN/RUS brawl.......then I realized, I'm showing my son violence to help him love a sport........so another approach is in order. I want him to feel that excitement of scoring a goal, or making a save(if he wants), as I think it's just such a great sport, and his Grandparents on both sides don't like sports to much, unless it's a title fight(U.S Grandpa, and ma), or the WJC( a la Canadian Grand ma......my Dad is Scotish, so he doesn't like any huge activities, unless they involve place settings, or in other words a MEAL!).

This X-mas the WJC are going to be the place I try to get him to enjoy the sport. I have already had him out on skates, and he was learning really fast, so this is the year!

I loved Dan Kordic but his brother was a beast man. Kordic, Probie, Twist, Ray, Shack...getting some serious nostalgia off this thread.

I remember all the big ones more or less from early 60's on.

John Kordic was a huge personal favourite of mine.

Another I really liked was Steve Durbano. Tony Twist too, and he gives very good "mic". I've heard him talk.

Probert-Crowder were bigones...

John K was great. When he got to pounding.. One Habs playoffs he was their best player in an embarassing losing effort to Boston.

And we cannot forget Dave Brown. Legendary lefty.

So many people don't know or don't remember how tough John Ferguson was and he went looking for it plus back then if you played on a Habs team you had to be able to play. Bobby Hull and Ferguson used to have some great ones and not many guys wanted to fight Hull.

Not huge but tough. I think he had 30 goals back when 30 meant something. Close to it anyway.
