CarGo heading toward free agency?

08:41 AM ET 12.20 | Rockies owner Dick Monfort addressed the thought of keeping the team's "O's," which includes Carlos Gonzalez, over the long term. Gonzalez told Venezuelan reporters last week that the Rockies are continuing talks about a long-term contract extension. But Gonzalez noted that agent Scott Boras is now in control of the discussions. That means it's unlikely the Rockies will get anything done to prevent CarGo from becoming a free agent. "We would be willing to do something big. Maybe at some point and time CarGo will force the issue. Maybe he won't," Monfort said. "The problem is in three years, if we don't think we can keep him. Then you have to do something. But I want to keep him. He's a great person. A great player. We want him here."

Between the spam and this, kinda makes you not want to even bother coming to SI anymore!

Cracks me up seeing the A's look for middle-of-the-order bats when they could still have Andre Ethier and Carlos Gonzalez on the roster.

The Denver folks must have a lot of fun with his nickname.

Why the hell are we getting this 3 years before he becomes a FA? How bout let's discuss what A-rod does in 7 years.

Bummer for the Rockies as soon as Bora$$ became Cargo's agent. Doubtless the Yankees or Red Sox will be shoveling buckets of cash his way in 3 years. Not good for baseball, not good at all.

More like CarGon, amma right or amma right?

This kid is a special talent. I remember randomly tuning in for a Rockies game last season and watching him hit a walk-off homerun.....for the cycle. Plus he's five-tool and can play any outfield position. If he comes close to repeating last season, he's headed for big money, $100 million club wouldn't surprise me.

cargo is the best CF in the game. He plays gold glove caliber defense, hits for average, hits for power, and has speed on the bases. whats not to love about this guy. im sure the rockies would want nothing more but to lock him up with the rest of their core talent. but boras isnt going to let that happen, oh no. boras will want him to go to FA and start a biding war to get the top dollar so that boras can get as much money as he can.

He'll eventually end up on Team Venezuela (Detroit Tigers).

Boras is a cancer. No offense to cancer intended.

December 21, 2010  03:27 PM ET

Another reason their should be a salary cap in MLB, this way you don't have agents like Boras, sucking off the talent from teams and bidding up the process with bogus competition for players.

Why would Gonzalez want to stay in Colorado? He was drafted by the D-backs, traded to the A's, and traded to Colorado. He probably wants to play in the AL, facing weaker pitching.

Colorado is a hitters park for Average. Ball can be driven almost anywhere in the park.
