Can Gustavsson handle No. 1 status?

08:27 AM ET 12.22 | While Jean-Sebastien Giguere rests a groin injury, the Maple Leafs can now add goaltending to a list of concerns that already includes a lack of scoring and waffles being thrown on their home ice. Now that it's going to be Jonas Gustavsson's Monster Mash for the next two weeks, is the second-year Swede up to the task? ... When the team can least afford it, Gustavsson has run into some technical turbulence. He has given up nine goals in six periods dating back to Giguere's injury in Calgary last Thursday, topped by five Atlanta goals on 18 shots Monday at the ACC.

Doesn't look like it. You know, for all the hype, this kid has looked pretty pedestrian with the chances he has had this year. I know his d-men aren't playing well either, but he just doesn't look that good. The last stretch where Giguere was hurt wasn't so bad, but this stretch will likely be where he makes his name for himself, good or bad.

No goalie can look good in front of this train wreck. Turnover city.

I thought that is why the Leafs went out and signed him, to be #1.
I thought Giggy was BB's backup plan if "the Monster" could not handle the North American game right away.

Buc's point is correct - Partick Roy in his prime could not make this team look good right now

There's a greater chance of Hank cheering for the Canucks.

The Leafs could use some facelift bar for christmas.

I would disagree. It's not exactly Mike Bossy or Brett Hull scoring on the Leafs...so some of the criticism has to be placed on their goaltending as well.

I got an extra goalie to trade if you got any more of those lottery picks.

He's okay GB if you like your #1 goalie carrying a Sv% of .894 with 3.10 GAA and ranked somewhere in the 40's. Didn't I read on here just yesterday that he was one of Burkie's successes?

Yep yep. The best of any sport can't be the best with crap around them.

"soft" goals fall on the goalie, agree - and I would go so far as to say Giggy and Monster may have lost games letting in bad goals when they had goal support (in any particular game). But, what I am saying the Leafs O is suspect at best, the D is servicable on a good night, and so with sometimes shaky goaltending the losses continue to pile up.
That also falls to the coach to put a system and lines in place that best suits the players he has available.

#1 Leaf Goalie status???Does it really matter to be the best of the worst ?

December 22, 2010  10:50 AM ET

I do think the guy is a goalie. He probably won't ever be an elite goalie, but does have the potential to be elite. Just keep starting him, see what happens.

My apologies...his save percentage puts him somewhere in the 60's.

Tough to shine as a #1 G on a team that plays like a pile of #2.
