Should Collie consider retiring?

08:03 AM ET 12.24 | By all most accounts, Austin Collie is a heart-and-soul football guy. He is, as Peyton Manning put it the other day, "a guy who really loves football," a young man who constantly watches tape of himself and other receivers, who is always carving out time in the offseason to run routes with Manning and earn himself a place in the quarterback's circle of trust. And now, he probably should be thinking about retirement. ... Every day, it seems, we learn about more of these men whose lives have been taken away from them by football. Every day, it seems, we learn more about the toll that repeated concussions can take, with talk about possible links to Alzheimer's and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig's disease.

Give the headline you would think that info would be in the story. Do these writers go to correspondence schools for any education?

I hope he rests up and comes back next year. However, I don't think he will receive as much media or quarterback attention with Anthony Gonzales and Dallas Clark coming back full speed next year.

Indeed. I feel bad for the guy. I really hope he comes back healthy and ready to go next season.

I kind of think the NFL should add an auto-IR rule for players with 2+ concussions in a single-season. Force them to sit out the rest of the season, for the benefit of their health and their career.

Might also be wise depending on how many prior concussions a player has had that if they get one they sit out the rest of the season. That may be tough for the player and team but they don't usually think about future health.

That's too practical.......The NFL only needs to "appear" to have the players best interest at heart....

Yes, but they don't. If they had a realistic health plan that covered players after they retired, then they probably would. Of course the players would have to contribute.

Your last sentence is a big part of the problem. So many players have no clue how the former players grew the game, don't appreciate the history and only care about themselves. All you have to do is listen to the loud mouths.

Perhaps players who get concussions frequently should consider wearing the newer helmets...yes they are larger but they will save a life
