09:08 AM ET 12.26 | A story on the ChicagoNow.com website cited two sources stating that Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel will be done coaching the Buckeyes after the Sugar Bowl matchup with Arkansas. The report claimed that Buckeye recruits have been informed that Tressel will not be back as head coach and they can look at other scholarship opportunities. Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith promptly responded to the Tressel rumor with the following tweet: Merry Xmas everyone!! Go back to drinking your eggnog!! Rumors not true.

I'm of the school of thought that this whole thing is false myself. But one has to wonder where did this rumor come from? Because rumors don't just spring out of thin air.

Svt brought this article up yesterday. Thanks Svt.

Gene Smith has it listed under his ebay account - right next to his Athletic Director integrity. Both items are getting a lot of views but nobody is bidding on either.

I don't see him leaving. I do see him having some challenges early on next season if they 5 game suspensions hold. It will be interesting. tOSU might be down, and Michigan will likely be rebuiling.

If the suspensions hold, at least four of those five guys will book it for the pros which pretty much turns the 5-game suspension into a full-season suspension effect-wise. Losing Terrelle Pryor would be nothing short of devastating to the Buckeyes. That guy is so much a part of their most recent success. Things are certainly looking up for Wisconsin, that's for sure.

They might as well go pro. All economic arguments would be leave for the NFL now. What's holding them back - school spirit?

Stu, IMO I think Tressel is a man of values and he really wanted to suspend the kids from the bowl game and the higher up of Ohio State and the NCAA didn't agree with him. If he sticks around, what will that tell the future recruits and their parents? IMO, Tressel must stand by his values and suspend the kids or step down!!! Just my opinion.

The "give away" to this ridiculous rumor is right here:
"The report claimed that Buckeye recruits have been informed that Tressel will not be back as head coach and they can look at other scholarship opportunities"

Are you kidding me??? IF and I said IF people Tressel was going to step down, the last people on the face of God's green earth who would be informed of such a decision are the recruits! That is a tell tale give away that this is an unadulterated fabrication.

By the way, think it out who would tell the recruits. Let's imagine that Old Timer's boy was one of the recruits and last night or two days ago Gene Smith called to say that Tressel is stepping down. Don't you think Old Timer would have had his "press conference" by now telling the world what was told to him
This is BS Move on.

They got $395 each for their school spirit!

Suspending them for the bowl game would have made much more sense on a number of levels but they would probably not come out with a W against the Razorbacks without these 5.

We predicted this stirring didn't we OT?

Nothing is holding them back and if the suspension holds they will all likely go pro. Ohio St will not be hurt as much as you think regarding their departures. The defense is the core of this team now and they return very well next year. We are all waiting for Rod Smith at tailback, he was redshirted this year. DeVier Posey has been a dissappointment so get Duron Carter (Chris's boy) back and get on with it.

BB9, what's your take "if" Tressel really wanted to suspend immediately and was overruled? Know it is theoretic at this point but his history seems to indicate that is what he would have preferred.
