08:22 AM ET 12.31 | What are the odds? The wife of winger Ryan Shannon -- who was in a lower-bowl seat at a sold-out Scotiabank Place watching a 4-0 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes -- went home with a special souvenir from the "four or five" posts the Senators hit. Against all odds, the gift was from her husband. "When I hit the crossbar, the puck went over the netting and landed on my wife's lap," Shannon said Thursday of the third-period scoring chance. "She's got a bruise on her left thigh. ... Out of 20,000 people, it hit my wife." Shannon was quick with a quip when asked if he was aiming at his bride. "There was a Toronto Maple Leaf fan sitting next to her," he said. "But I missed by a couple of inches."

What are the odds??? Apparently not so long as we may think. An MLB player hit his own mom with a foul ball this past season. Hmmmmm ... ... ... Maybe mommy issues can make us do things.

Not really. He's a Senator so he wasn't aiming at her that's for sure. (Nice quote though)

"there was a maple leaf fan next to her but i missed by a couple inches. "

Rofl.

That's the only highlite the Sens have provided so far this season.

"NHL star hits own wife in stands"

Talk about your misleading headlines.

My cousin made his first MLB start for the brewers against the reds about 8 years ago. He was pitching to Ken Griffey Jr and Jr fouled a pitch which my grandpa caught. This kind of stuff happens.

That's even more amazing. Be a good story for Ripley's!

That's what I call a premeditated accident!

Shannon said, "She's got a bruise on her left thigh. ...."

Is that why he hit her?

December 31, 2010  11:43 AM ET

If this was an NFL team there would be a whole different story.

It gives new meaning to the phrase "hitting the 5 hole".

"She's got a bruise on her left thigh. ... Out of 20,000 people, it hit my wife."

Ah, the old "she got hit by a puck that I shot" excuse....
