08:36 AM ET 01.03 | As spring training nears, the Rays aren't likely to land any new impact players via free agency. You look at the free agents available and you consider the money the Rays have to spend -- or are willing to spend -- and you keep in mind their reluctance to trade a pitcher and it's not hard to reach this conclusion: It's time Matt Joyce sees left-handed pitching. ... He has the kind of pop in his bat than can provide protection for Evan Longoria. But so far, the left-handed-hitting Joyce has mainly been used against right-handed pitching. In fact, Joyce has started against a lefty only five times at the major-league level. In 51 career at-bats against lefties, Joyce is batting .157 with zero home runs and six RBIs.
