Berkman deal giving Thome bigger ideas

08:21 AM ET 01.04 | If the Twins would like to see Jim Thome in the 2011 lineup, it may cost them a whole lot more than in 2010. There are indications the Thome camp raised its eyebrows when Lance Berkman signed a one-year, $8 million deal with the Cardinals. Thome made $1.7 million last season while batting .283 with 25 homers and 59 RBI. Clearly, he outperformed what he was paid, and their thinking could be that it's time make up for what he didn't earn last season while he swats career homer No. 600 in a Twins uniform.

I know the Os are in the running for him too and they do have a good amount of money to play with still. He could rake in Camden Yards

He shouldn't expect the Twins to be shelling out Berkman money.

Question is what can he get. Doubt he will get that much from the twins.

It's hard to say he's of much value. Sooner or later, he's gonna stop producing. The stadium is still the draw, not him, so number 600 means nothing. The question is, is he worth the gamble? Not what he can get. Twins aren't a gambling team.

Flipside, though, was that he is a tremendous clubhouse person and fits in nicely.

that is not the question for Thome. considering the berman deal, his question is what can he get. even without the Stadium or with the 600 it is doubtful the Twins would pay him 8 per.

given how much Thome enjoys MN, it may not take $8M.

Ha!

I think the added revenue that the chase for 600 will produce would make any deal for Thome worth it. Berkman doesn't deserve 8 million and hasn't for the last few years, he doesn't even deserve the 1.7 that Thome got last year. I would go for about 6 a year if I were the Twins brass. He will give you nothing but a full effort every night.

The Twins are already in rather deep with payroll...but they'll sign him.

Thome would be a bargain at twice the salary he was paid last year. He's still productive.

What a joke. Where else is he going to go to make anything near what he made with the WhiteSox this past season.
