Sutter brothers not yet speaking (or texting)

08:40 AM ET 01.05 | Brent Sutter, still the coach of the Flames, and his brother, the outsted GM Darryl Sutter, are pitched in an unfortunate silence. Asked if he'd spoken to his older brother since he was dismissed as Flames GM last Tuesday, coach Brent shook his head and lowered his eyes. "No," he said quietly. Brent said he'd reached out by sending several texts to Darryl following his ousting but hasn't heard back. Sad but telling silence from a brother. Brent has long publicly downplayed the lack of communication between him and Darryl during their year and a half together with the Flames, but when asked yesterday if he'd spoken to Darryl his honest answer said it all. Understandably, Darryl has proven elusive since his dismissal.

Darryl hasn't figured out how to text yet - he hears the beeping on the phone, but goes to check his microwave, then gets confused

Apparently Darryl speaks only to the spammers.

C'mon, he's out as GM, do we need to keep beating on him.

Curious silence between brothers though. You think Daryl blames Brent?

You're right - it's like they make it too easy sometimes...

who really knows if one brother blames the other, plus there are 2 other Sutter bros. on the staff, as well, so who knows how much hating is going on?

I cannot figure why the owners did not can Brent, as well, but maybe there is a bigger plan at work here

I agree. There's no point to it. He's done.

Everyone knows (including Brent) that, when you're wupped and hurting, you need people to leave you alone so you can crawl into a corner somewhere and lick your wounds for a while.

Just don't leave any rope or loaded guns laying around the barn in Viking!

Darryl is probably pissed that Brent didn't fall on his sword for him.

Brent kept his job because people still think he can coach. A list that includes me. Unfortunately, the Flames have been the Country Club that Burke talked of when starting in Toronto, and they've been killing coaches since Daryl stepped into the GM's chair he was apparently not capable of filling. Brent, given guys who want to play, can coach as well as anyone in the league, I truly believe that. Look at the numbers he got out of a guy like Langenbrunner when he was in NJ, for instance. Or Elias' resurgence in that time. Parise and Zajac even made their names under Sutter, not Lemaire. Iggy never bought into his system and its killed the Flames, but if Brent can get all those points out of a 3rd liner like Langenbrunner, you KNOW he can coach a team that wants to be coached. He's just stuck with a team that has stagnated in the last few years and needed some change at the top. He may be looking for a job by season's end, but I don't think he'll be looking long.

Brent and Feaster have an excellent relationship-Duhryl likely sees Brent as a traitor for that.Brent pushed for resting kipper(good plan)Duhryl wanted to have whomever coached play kipper til he dropped,Brent wants players going to the net while Duhryl likes everyone to fall back and try to win 2-1 every nite-they are brothers but they are oil and water regarding hockey philosophy.

Can you imagine Christmas dinner with that family? Noone would know who to pass what, haha. Must be a nightmare for those who somehow choose to marry into the Sutters eh?

Not a very Happy New Year in the Sutter household eh? Nice to see them handling this like mature adults.

No nightmare. They're all siblings. :)

Langs had one good year with Sutter and had nearly the same year last year with JL. You want to give Langenbrunner credit, you thank Parise who he was put on a line with. The only reason why Parise and Zajac made their names was because he happened to be their coach at the time. Parise was a point per game player with JL, I think Sutter had very little to do with Parise's development. And Elias had better seasons without Sutter and again only had one good year with Sutter. You are putting to much stock in Sutter. I was someone who initially thought he was a good coach but never really fixed the glaring mistakes the team had all year, and it cost them in the playoffs.

So did Langenbrunner, Zajac and Parise have career seasons under Sutter or not?

Did the Devils go into those playoffs as true contenders or not?

If it was as simple as putting Langer on a line with Parise, why couldn't Lemaire get the same points or more out of him? (Comparable numbers, to be fair, but Langer never had a 1st line shot before Sutter, who saw the potential there).

Every NHL coach is key to a young player's development unless we're talking about Barry Melrose and Stamkos. Joe Thornton STILL credits Pat Burns for the NHLer he has become. Parise had a hockey dad no doubt, but Sutter coached him to be an NHL star.

Didn't Brodeur win his last Vezina under Sutter's watch too?

3 coaching changes (2 coaches), missed playoffs and a last place finish have followed Sutter's exit from NJ - a team he left as Stanley Cup contenders/favourites. Lou-Lou is still considered one of the league's best GMs, so really, how does Brent not get SOME credit for the job he did there. Had he not spurned them for the Flames, Devils fans would STILL be telling us what a good coach he is.

January 5, 2011  12:32 PM ET

Oh, and Elias' first year under Sutter was his recovery year from Hepatitis, if I remember right, so his production that year was bound to be affected.

Disagree with you and Roamer. Why should he be above criticsm. He treated the fans and the media in Calgary like they were second class citizens and sewered their team. The vey least he should do is man up hold a press conference explain his side of the story thank the organization for the opportunity rather than sit and stew and act like a spoiled child. if the two brothers cant't get their act together so be it,no big deal. You won't find me feeling sorry for him.

He stepped away rather than force a firing or watching the rest of the dismal season as a stubborn GM holdout. He messed the team up royally, but he checked out on his own (more or less) when the time finally came. That shows enough class to put him above the trash talking he's been getting for 2 years (deservedly), if you ask me. As soon as he realised he wasn't the guy to fix the problems he stepped away...even if it was a bit later than many (most) would have liked.

If they cast Burkie in the role of Bobby then I definitely want to catch the premiere then buy the DVD the day it comes out.
