'Guinea pig' Sizemore to stay in center

08:25 AM ET 01.07 | The Indians are counting on a successful result in the experiment of Grady Sizemore's microfracture knee surgery. He is something of a guinea pig in baseball for microfracture, a procedure in which doctors intentionally make tiny fractures in a body to promote growth of new cartilage and a surgery more often done on basketball and football players. While there haven't been setbacks following his June surgery, [Chris] Antonetti said, Sizemore just recently began modified baseball-related activities. Sizemore likely won't be available for the start of spring training, but the club is optimistic he'll be ready by opening day. Once he is, the Indians plan to keep Sizemore in center field rather than move him to a position that doesn't necessitate covering as much space.

Microfracture surgery has been done many times for basketball players. I don't think the sport the athlete plays is the factor of success. It's the patient.
Hopefully he can come back and resume what looked to be a promising career. If not, we can add him to the Rick Manning-Joe Charboneau wing of busts

This piece of news should help brighten up a winters day for the average Indians fan. Good luck with that.

I agree that it's the patient that is the most important factor.
however, I would think that it would be easier for a baseball player because it seems to me there is not as much wear and tear on a knee in baseball as compared to football or basketball. That said, I'm not a knee doctor, so I really don't know what the **** I'm talking about.

Intentional tiny fractures to promote new growth. In the Knee? Wow. They're doing alot today knees and such. Hope it works out for him. I would say a center fielder needs his knees.

Yeah, I think they help.
If he doesn't make it back, it'll be sad. Three years ago, he was arguably the best center-fielder in baseball and his career looked to be on a tragectory to put him in conversations with some of the best of all time. Two injury-plagued, sub-par seasons later and I'm left wondering if he'll even be able to play. Crazy.

So true.
His first four full seasons in the bigs, he averaged 160 games. Then he just hit the wall.
I'm hopeful for this coming season, but I'm sure as hell not banking on it.

I did some research about the procedure when it was announced, and my many accounts, it's not that huge of a deal. Historically, the success rate for basketball players is 50%, but apparently that percentage has gone up significantly over the last five years or so. They also say a lot has to do with how well the patient follows the doctor's orders durning recovers. Apparently, you have to keep all weight off of it while still doing motion exercises.
As I said, I'm hopeful. I wouldn't call him done yet, but he's got a ways to go before I think he's going to be a force again.
