Angels preparing run at Pujols?

09:59 AM ET 01.09 | Talks between the Cardinals and Albert Pujols have begun amid optimism about an extension. Could the Angels be keeping their options open to have flexibility to make a run for Pujols? The Yankees and Red Sox wouldn't seem to have a first base need and it's not clear whether teams like the Cubs, Mets and Dodgers would have the appetite for a $30-million-a-year player.

No way the Cardinals will let him go. Their fans will revolt, and they're pretty revolting on a normal day...

There is no need for the Angels to make a run at Pujols. He is an average player. At best. He can't hold a candle to Lyle Overbay. Go Bucs!!!

But the Cards can't afford a player at an A-Rod type contract. If that's really what Pujols wants, then they should trade him for assets, because giving him a $300 million contract is out of the question

At first I thought this might be a serious post, until I read the Lyle Overbay part.

We have a great 1st baseman. Spend the money elsewhere.

Wait.... you're telling me you wouldn't rather have future Hall of Famer Lyle Overbay over Pujols?

Do you mean Overbay's High School Hall of Fame?

QUOTE(#27):

Bull****. The Cardinals have a great fan base, excellent attendance, and just moved into a new ballpark a few years ago. Other than the Yankees, they have about as much revenue as any team. The problem has been the new ownership. Whereas old man Busch spent money to field a winner, the current ownership spends enough to be competitive and pockets plenty of profits. If they let Pujols go, those profits will decrease quickly.

The Cardinals from the 80's were built totally differently.

They had speed from top to bottom... didn't sign a "slugger" on the level of Pujols until signing Jack Clark.

So, they didn't have a situation where they had to retain one key slugger at a significantly higher salary than their speedsters.
