Dwayne Jarrett was wearing a Phillies cap, standing in front of his locker and talking quietly to two reporters about his frustrating rookie season with the Panthers. As he spoke, veteran receiver Steve Smith walked up to his own nearby locker and looked straight at Jarrett. Smith hasn't been talking to the media recently, but he did speak to Jarrett. "Instead of talking to the media, why don't you go watch some film?" Smith said. Jarrett gave a polite half-smile and kept talking. "Seriously," Smith added in a stern voice and walked away.

Good job Steve.

November 1, 2007  07:16 AM ET

when the heart of the team tells you about it, and you fail to get it. your days are numbered unless you get your act together.

November 1, 2007  07:20 AM ET

Ouch DJ, I guess living off you USC success has expired.

November 1, 2007  07:32 AM ET

awww, how sad. Smith actin like a lil bit*h right now... That team has more problems than Jarrett.

November 1, 2007  07:40 AM ET

I have no problem with that Jerzy man. Steve Smith is a TEAM player as well as Clutch Performer. He is a leader and he wants his team to do Everything possible to win. If the Rook wants to talk to the media rather than watch film and get better prepared..........He needs to be off Steve Smith's TEAM.

Jarrett needs to take this serious. He is tall, slow, and doesn't focus too well. He needs to get into the film room and find ways to outsmart the DB's. He is playing with an almost 44yr old QB and David Carr. They will not help much. He has to find out What route his perticular DB bites on, Where the FS sits on Cover 2 (Inside or Outside of the Hash on Slants, How deep he gets with Crossing Routes over the Linebackers....)

There are so many things that Normal Fans do not understand about the game. Carr is not accurate. The Panthers have a hard time running the Football. So this will leave them with alot of 3rd down and 7's......Teams will play a lot of Cover 2 on 3rd down. He needs to learn tendencies and how to exploit them like Steve Smith does!

November 1, 2007  07:53 AM ET

True...Steve Smith is a rock on that team. If he's telling a rookie to get into the film room...it's probably because thats what Smith is doing and he doesn't see the rookie who is complaining about his freshman year, next to him.

November 1, 2007  07:57 AM ET

Jarrett is not a Talented WR, not one that will be anything special. Given his athletic ability and speed. The Talent level is a Major Difference in the NFL. Guys have to work 5 times as hard to even make it on the roster.

He has to learn everything about his position and the guys that line up in front of him. He has to learn where to sit in certain zones, break off of routes on certain Blitz packages, how to read coverages on option routes to give his QB the best possible throw, how to adjust to the ball.

In the NFL, its not run your designed route and the QB will hit you. Its a whole lot of Mental games and its like Chess. You have to understand the game to be a player!

My vote goes to Smith...wait, this is not a Throwdown?

November 1, 2007  08:08 AM ET

This in the same week that Mike Williams gets cut

November 1, 2007  08:33 AM ET

Its funny how you guys can tell all of this by that little quote. I bet it is more to this then meets the eye. I like how you guys say Steve Smith is a team player. Hey didn't he punch out a team mate in practice? I guess he was having one of those days right. Remember you can't beleive everytthing you read in the paper or on the net. Steve Smith could be right and he could be wrong. Unless where are in the locker room on that team we will never know for sure.

November 1, 2007  08:53 AM ET

I think Steve Smith is wrong in this situation...dude is a rookie and he is going to make mistakes...he is young (Leinart suffers from the same mistakes) but the best thing isn't to call your TEAMMATE out publicly, step one is to have a personal intervention and talk man to man.....public embarrassments only worsen the situation and cause a rift in the team. Carolina doesn't need anymore drama....Steve should have kept on not talking to the media and had a personal consult with Jarrett...there is no I and team and it seems to me that both Jarrett and Smith need to revisit that lesson.

November 1, 2007  09:02 AM ET

Steve Smith is a beast. If I was him, I would've told the reporters to scram and did it all then. Good job!!

November 1, 2007  09:02 AM ET

when your 4-3 and wondering if the team will make the playoffs, see father time starting at qb, and some rookie is spending his time talking about himself and what a hard season he is having. a team leader needs to put a boot in his butt.

November 1, 2007  09:04 AM ET

Dwayne Jarrett owes Smith an apology for putting smith in the position that smith had to say anything to him like that in front of reporters.

November 1, 2007  09:13 AM ET

Jarrett should listen to SS. He know's what he's talking about.

November 1, 2007  09:21 AM ET

I totally forgot this guy was even in the league. I watched the entire Colts/Panthers game and didn't hear him mentioned once. Did he play? Did he even take the field?

November 1, 2007  09:27 AM ET

They guy's the best WR in the league (yeah, that's right TO and Moss). He deserves the benefit of the doubt.

When the captain of your team tells you something, giving him a polite smile and ignoring him isn't the way to go. I really haven't seen much out of DJ, but from what I've seen of Smith I figure he's worth listening to.

November 1, 2007  09:51 AM ET

Jarrett completely deserves getting called out. The team cut Meshawn with the intention of replacing him with a younger version in Dwayne. The guy can't even get off the inactive list except for a few games this season. While the Panthers have other problems the lack of a #2 receiver has plagued them all season. Steve Smith has been relegated to having big 1st halves and then getting double and triple teamed the rest of the game. With no 2nd option for the QB to throw to, the offense gets bogged down.

The Panthers front office is not without fault too. They have been drafting like crap lately. Beason looks like a good first rounder this year but thats about it. If you go and look at the Panthers' last 5 drafts it is not a thing of beauty. Not to mention some of the big free agent contracts they've given out over the last few years that have not proven to be worth it. Ken Lucas and Maake Kemoeatu being the two biggest ones.

November 1, 2007  09:56 AM ET

The best WR in the league?? LMAO... Moss would jump over that little man and but his balls on his forehead Fungushnitzel.......

November 1, 2007  09:56 AM ET

The Panthers should have drafted TE Greg Olsen. They have not have a target at TE in a looooong time.

They need a Good TE and No. 2 WR.........It's not easy to find but Smith isn't getting any younger.....
