Bettman misreading fans on lockout worry

08:35 AM ET 01.11 | The lockout is still fresh in many a fan's mind, and while Gary Bettman feels it's too early to ramp up with worry, some believe worry is warranted. Fans fear the loss of another season, and for what? The last lockout was supposed to reduce ticket prices and allow teams to compete on even footing. The ticket price promise was broken and small-market teams can't flourish with a salary floor that's higher than the ceiling was after the lockout. Bettman seems to think it's automatic that fans will return after another lockout, but that's not guaranteed.

Worth reading the whole article. Gary thinks people will buy anything he says just because he believes it himself. He gives ole Burkie a run for top kool aid pusher.

with labor issues pending for the NFL (likely to fix) and NBA (not so likely), this would be the ideal time for Buttramm and the NHL brain trust (haha, funny right?) to really push the NHL back into a sports spotlight.
but, I don't hold my breath for Gary to get it right

The Dwarf is a jerk, always has been, always will be. But one of the real problems is that fans are increasingly unable to afford the ridiculous prices for tickets. With Don Fehr lurking on the sidelines I can guarantee that previous NHLPA demands are gonna look reasonable by comparison. Unrestricted free agency for all will no doubt be next causing the gap between rich, big, and not-so-rich ,small franchises to be very dramatic as time goes by. I am in no way trying to cheer for ownership as reasonable or intelligent in their approach either. Somebody ought to realize that there ain't no way you can take in $1 and pay out $2 forever without consequences at some point. I'd love it if fans would just say "come back when you've got a clue" and not buy tickets for a month. That would get the message across.....................even to these dimwits.

There HAS to be a reason that every time he sets foot on stage at the NHL draft he gets boooooed!

He gets booed in every arena wherever he goes. What was the point of the lockout anyway at this point? Salaries are at the same place they were before and there is a difference between the salary floor and ceiling nearing 20 mil. They had a lockout and didn't really solve the issues.

If the NHL goes through another stoppage it will suck. That being said the same owners who allow this buffoon to stear the ship will finally have less compatriots in their club.Contraction will be an immediate and severe result.

If another lockout finally got rid of Bettman it might be worth it.

The **** takes the fans for granted and Fuhrer Fehr doesn't care about them. You can tell how well the next negotiations will go from our perspective.

Browns hit it right on the head. This would be an ideal time for the NHL to grab a foothold. But alas we're stuck with that moron Bettman.

Ill take a lockout if it means Bettman and his watered down product goes away. Some teams dont survive...so what its called thinning the herd.Maybe the casual fan doesnt come back but im not one of them so i dont care. I want a better product. LOSE THE CAP.

I have been a hockey fan for more than 60 years and I must say that Bettman is without a doubt the worst commissioner in all of sports. He actually makes Bud selig look good. What you will see with Don Fehr is that the NHL with not be able to pull any of their regular crap any morre. My own feeling is that the best thing for the NHL is contraction. Like it or not, the owner's own greed put the NHL in this spot.

I gave up on MLB when they went on strike and I almost gave up on the NHL. Only the Red Wings stood on my way.

That might mean you'll have to buy airplane tickets and travel a ways to see live NHL hockey.
You can always give up the swamp and move to .... Detroit! :-)
