Crosby's absence highlights Malkin slump

08:43 AM ET 01.11 | The Penguins have scored three goals in their three games without Sidney Crosby, placing Evgeni Malkin squarely in the spotlight. After Monday's morning skate, Bylsma was asked why Malkin has not been as consistently dominant as he has been in the past. There was a long pause. "I don't have a good answer for you," Bylsma said. ... For a long time, the coaches have been trying to teach Malkin not to press, that if you stay focused on the process instead of the results, the results will come. They're still trying. "Geno's an emotional player, and sometimes coming off injuries or not being able to practice does affect his mindset going into the game," Bylsma said. "That's something he's working on and trying to get better at."

Here you go DWI. Did you write this one?

Malkin's killing me lately. Guy has a world of talent, but I think his work ethic lacks in a big way. I've heard rumors of his steadfast refusal to improve specific parts of his game that he struggles with (i.e. faceoffs), and I think that's one big thing that separates him from 87.

So I wonder who they'll go after heavy in the playoffs

I love articles like this. Basically, if Sid was in these games the Pens wouldn't have lost? Is that the conjecture here? That would be pretty insulting to the teams that beat them i guess.

I would hate to be Geno or really any of the other players on this team. If you have success, it's not because of anything you did, it's because of Crosby. If you do not have success, it's because you are NOT Crosby.

The media circus surrounding Crosby has been spinning the yarn long enough that the players are starting to believe it, i guess. There's plenty of talent on this team to be able to win without him.

They should have asked Bylsma after the "evening skate."

Pascal Dupuis said it perfectly on 24/7!

Glad I missed it then.

loved 24/7 but every time they showed Dupuis i had to wonder "how many horrible things have happened to you to make your nose look like that" :-)

Malkin reminds me of another famous former Russian Pen. Kovalev. Flashes of greatness, but overall pretty lazy despite having tons of talent. I would defiently look for offers for him if I were Shero. Crosby, Staal and Malkin will all not be on this team in 3 yrs. One of them will be out. My guess is Malkin.

Some say he's injured but, but they said he was injured last year as well. Then he goes to Russia after the playoffs and tears it up in the WC.

Both Malkin and Crosby have wing issues. The difference? Crosby adapted and focused on scoring more and changed/elevated his game. Last year? Malkin did nothing but slash and hook people. This year he's under a point per game.
I wish he would perform like the Geno of old but I think seeing him on a west coast team as the 1st line center is a more realistic future.

But he is on the All-Star roster ;)

Agree 100%.
Good time to put down bets on pro-line against Pens, because Crosby is out? They have too much talent on this team, and do not have to hope that Crosby is in the lineup to get a win(though he helps).
They got through Fleurys bad start and I,m sure they'll get over this hurdle.Lots of games left.
As long as they don't bypass my Flyers I,m happy.

January 11, 2011  01:40 PM ET

This isn't much different than the Flyers having to deal with Pronger's absence. It took a couple of games to adjust and then they were fine. I suspect the Pens will adjust tho, Crosby isn't going to be out that long.

Depends. He is probably checking his fantasy stats first.

Man killed on golf course:

A foursome of guys is waiting at the Men's Tee, while a foursome of women is hitting from the Ladies' Tee. The Ladies are taking their time. Finally the last lady hits her ball...and she hacks it 10 feet. Frustrated....she walks to her ball for a second shot...and this time she whiffs it completely. Then she moves forward and hacks it another 10 feet...then she finally hacks it another 5 feet.

She looks back at the patiently waiting golfers at the Men's Tee Box and says apologetically; "I guess all those ****ing Lessons I took over the winter didn't help."

One of the men immediately smiles and responds; "well, there you have it. You should have taken golf lessons instead!"

He never had a chance....he was only 43.....
