Weis takes blame for Irish woes

When asked by a reporter who covers Navy to sum up the reasons for the Irish's misery this year, Charlie Weis pointed the finger directly at himself and left it at that. "Why don't we just start with I probably... have not done the best job of having the team ready to go on a week-in-and-week-out basis, and we probably should leave it at that one," the Irish coach said. "Because if you are looking for me to give you a whole dossier of problems that have happened this year, there would be too many things. If you want good fodder, let's just throw me out there." The reporter even tried to let Weis off the hook a little, addressing Notre Dame's pervasive youth, but Weis held firm.

Gonna take a mighty big heave to toss that piece of fodder anywhere....

eat tha woes Weis....eat em down

November 2, 2007  09:08 AM ET

Isn't that was the institution is paying him for? The University of Notre Dame is paying him to take credit when they win and the blame when they lose.

This story is crap.

November 2, 2007  09:23 AM ET

Hold on here.....this is a ridiculous, outrageous story that was obviously planted by Tyrone Willingham.

Shame on you SI.....Weis is turning things around!!!!

Right?

November 2, 2007  09:38 AM ET

boring even when they suck we still have to hear about them.....

November 2, 2007  09:40 AM ET

he's a loser, he knows that he is a loser, he feels that he is a loser, he is perceived by everyone ( outside of indiana) as a loser, this is poetic justice for their racist treatment of Ty Willingham, fat charlie cant recruit, he cant prepare, he makes no adjustments regardless of the opposition, his team sucks....he's fat......and im through

November 2, 2007  09:55 AM ET

Please stop with the racist treatment of Tyrone Willingham comments. Do you remember Bob Davie? He was fired for having a 58% winning percentage at ND. And he was white. Guess what Tyrone's winning percentage was. That's right, 58%. The only difference was Bob put together a couple of 9-3 seasons that saved him, but Tyrone put together two bad seasons in a row in which the Irish were blown out often. So one coach was black, one was white, and both were fired for the same win percentage. Right now Charlie has a 61% winning percentage at ND. And like it or not he's going to get an extra year or two because ND is his alma mater. That should matter to a university.

Can't we get any original sports writing? Cliche's like this (Coach takes the blame) adds no original thought or value.

November 2, 2007  10:13 AM ET

Hey Antonio,
get your facts straight. The only thing Weis CAN do is recruit. You are right about game planning /adjustments. Mark my words ND wins a non-BCS bowl next year, and contends for the NC in the following year.
GO IRISH

November 2, 2007  10:30 AM ET

ND ain't gonna be contending for any NC for years to come....someone on here is delusional but can't fault you for being optimistic!

I'll give Weis some leeway w/ taking the blame. Personally I think he's done a terrible job and is probably not suited to be a HC but accepting the blame is a good step IMO towards moving the program in the right way. NC next year I'm afraid not, LOL!

November 2, 2007  10:51 AM ET

This is the reason why Weis has not gotten fired yet: he is a darling of the press. His PR skills are much better than Willingham's. (who's the better coach is to be decided) Plus, being a Belichik desciple does not hurt his rep. either.

November 2, 2007  10:53 AM ET

Well, Well, Well,

Oh Charlie has decided to stand up and take some responsibiliy here. Maybe some of his players will stick around more than 3 months now.

After ND got thumbed by Mich. 38-0, Charlie said, we can't block, we can't tackle, we can't run, we can't throw, we can't do anything. Then he came back to campus on Sunday morning and had a full pad practice. Way to go coach.

These are all things you should have worked on during the summer. I'm sure most of those kids did exactly what you asked of them over the summer. Then they get the blame for not being able to do anthing right. GREAT leadership coach. If those kids did everything asked of them and they aren't successful, you can bet you sweat bottom they're smart enough to know that they are not the problem.

November 2, 2007  10:57 AM ET

He is a master of NFL teams in his area of expertise. Like most who come down; he is not suited for the college level teams.

November 2, 2007  10:59 AM ET

ole Chuck-wagon Charlie is a legend in his own mind. just a good coordinator, not the head man... ND deserves him, that program is dead.

November 2, 2007  11:14 AM ET

A coach should take the blame, I mean I hate these guys yet I actually feel sad they are so bad. It's no fun this way, if not for a bunch of terrible plays by Uckla these guys would be winless.

November 2, 2007  11:48 AM ET

Just like Ohio State and several other teams give out helmet stickers to players for good performances, Weis should do the same.

Does anyone have any doubt that the stickers would have pictures of Twinkies on them? Maybe Ding ****.

Let's look at the difference: At ND, if the coach posts a 9-3 record he gets a 10M$ raise. In the SEC, the coach with a 9-3 record is on the hot seat fighting for his job.

November 2, 2007  01:38 PM ET

haha this is great.

NOT.

and lol at the "can weis wear more than sweats and tracks...". when you're a man of his size and stature, eh... he's only 25 lbs or so from making everything (no matter the fabric) look like spandex.

Willingham wasn't hired becasue he was black...and he asn't fired because he was black...he was fired because he didn't win enough games AND because he flat out could not recruit. Coaching aint the problem...talent is. It's coming back but it will take a year or two
