08:16 AM ET 01.14 | Message sent? [Mack] Brown, 59, has surrounded himself with three primary lieutenants with an average age of 34. Defensive coordinator Manny Diaz, the elder statesman of the group, is 36. Co-offensive coordinators Bryan Harsin, 34, and Major Applewhite, 32, remain too young to run for president in the U.S. (minimum age: 35). But the duo will be asked to jump-start Texas' most anemic offense in 20 years, with Harsin -- a newcomer from Boise State -- the play-caller and quarterbacks coach who will do the heaviest lifting in trying to improve an attack that averaged only 23.8 points per game and committed 30 turnovers in 2010.

Start with the running game. Amazing how so many GREAT running backs come out of Texas. LaMichael James, Knile Davis come to mind. Also, Gilbert may not be your man at qb. For the talent they bring in that has to be one of the worst offenses I have ever seen. Much work ahead!

I will say that I was not impressed with Applewhite when he was the OC at Bama. I am not sure if his hands were tied by Saban or not (probably). I love the idea of having a young coaching staff under Brown. It is the best of both worlds. You get to play for a legend in Brown but you have coordinators that can still relate to you.

They'll be good again, sooner rather than later.
Too much player talent and coaching experience for 2010 to be more than a blip. I say they win 9 minimum in 2011.

Let them have a lot of rein Mack. Don't pull the bit through the mouths of these racehorses when it my look a little too aggressive for you.

Amen, LUS, preach on bro! They can't even get close in the "future development" area of players.

Boy I am sure Longhorn fans are thrilled to read that headline. It's so comforting to know mack is committed.

If he hadn't made the change he should have been committed!...for a long, long time.

I'm pretty sure we had at least 2 coaches that went entirely by rivals films, rivals evaluations, and "who else offered" them. Both of those coaches had less than stellar careers and are not coaching college football "no more".
Some people don't realize that this isn't EAsports NCAA football and you can just recruit the 5 stars and they come in and take you to the BCS CG. You really have to get fits for your system.
And Applewhite's hands were tied because he was so inexperienced. Saban's not just going to let it all into the hands of someone not experienced. Ask Kirby Smart that. Kirby didn't have a lot of control over the defense when he took over, but over the years more and more was handed off to him as he proved his worth.

Brown committed to innovative rebuild

They have enough cash to get whoever they want. It comes down to pickng the right players. Mack hasn't done a very good job of that in some years.

Was it Mack's idea to do the Muschamp "Coach in waiting" thing or the AD?

IMO it only works if the HC is real, real close to retirement.

It's a horrible thing because there are a lot more rules for recruiting for the HCiW. I forgot what it was, but they are hamstringed for just a change in title.
