Sharks close to upgrade through trade

08:36 AM ET 01.18 | After a scuffling month of hockey that took the Sharks as far as a GM vouching for his head coach, the Sharks may be shaking their slumber -- and ready to deal. Don't be surprised if the Sharks make a deal sometime soon to add more experience, speed, size, energy and grit to the third or fourth line. ... The targeted player is someone currently playing in the NHL so you can scratch Owen Nolan off the list of possibilities. Doug Wilson was heading from Phoenix to Toronto for the annual prospects game featuring players from the Canadian junior leagues who are expected to go high in the 2011 entry draft. After Toronto, he's going to Worcester to check out the situation there -- and, not to stoke the fire, that would presumably include getting a first-hand look at Jonathan Cheechoo, who now has 14 goals and 37 points in 38 games.

Agreed Buc. What I find ironic about the article is the 'prospects' game is in To***to.

Far be it from me to say anything good about a Canuck, but did they not have Malhotra last year?

But they saw no need to keep him around till now? He was lethal on faceoffs in the playoffs.

"Jonathan Cheechoo, who now has 14 goals and 37 points in 38 games" in the AHL! this is the same player that has 17 goals in his last 127 NHL games. Who in their right mind would want him back?

January 18, 2011  11:06 AM ET

Nolan and Cheechoo, guys who've been there before...looks like Thornton,Heatley,Marleau not good enough anymore?

January 18, 2011  11:16 AM ET

Ben Eiger ???? Watch out Cup here they come...

A team that is hoping that he could remember how he had seasons with 55+ and 35+ goals...

Excellent point. I haven't seen him play much, but I like him. Attitude, effort, desire, ability to be part of a team.................all qualities he seems to have based on my very limited experience in watching him play. Is he a Hall of Famer? No.............but most guys are not. If he can fit in and contribute he's worth taking a chance on.

They just picked up Kyle Welwood off waivers. The Kings and the Stars approve this deal.

He's a perfect fit in SJ. He played soft with the Leafs but when he went to the Nux he played.....even softer.

Give To***to hockey fans a break, Canuck. They haven't seen this much talent on the ice live in decades.

LOL. Well, they did have the Ice Capades blow through once or twice but I get your point. :-)

Charmin use him in their ads promoting softness. Looks like a desperate move for a desperate team.

LMAO - Mr. Whipple, "Please don't squeeze the Wellwood."

Don't the Sharks practice against the Ice Capades on a regular basis? Bet you anything that the majority of the guys on the team find those skaters tough.

Except those seasons came in 05-06 and 06-07. Since then, he has had one decent season and two absolutely terrible ones.

Some guys might remember the hot chick they married 50 pounds and 2 kids ago, but that ain't gonna make the porker next to them any more attractive.
