08:15 AM ET 01.19 | An athlete walking away is rare, and rarer still with so much on the table, as was the case with Gil Meche. Sometimes players will sign for slightly less money to play on a contender or in a place they're comfortable. Sometimes they'll offer to defer money in order for the team to sign other players. What Meche did is different. Drayton Moore figured Meche would ask for a settlement. Maybe they'd split the remaining money. Meche never mentioned it. ... We see $12.4 million as a few lifetimes' worth of security. Meche already has that, and began to see it as a burden. Having money is great, but being defined by it can be difficult. "I didn't want to go through that again," he says. "Another season, to be the guy making $12 million and doing absolutely nothing to help this team. Not when I can walk away, be with my family."

I have a ton of respect for this decision.. He felt he couldn't compete and walked away from $12 million... wow.

No good deed ever goes unpunished...Meche is due.

Just dumb, especially when his shoulder, and career, were basically ruined by being forced to throw 132 pitches against Arizona a couple years back.

Walk Away Lyrics
Takin' My Time
usin' My Line
tryin' To Decide What To Do
looks My My Stop
don't Wanna Get Off
got Myself Hung Up On You

seems To Me
you Don't Want To Talk About It
seems To Me
you Just Turn Your Pretty Head
and Walk Away

places I've Known
things That I'm Growin'
don't Taste The Same Without You
i Got Myself In
the Worst Mess I've Been
and I Find Myself Startin' Ta Doubt You

seems To Me
we Talk All Night
here Comes The Morning
seems To Me
you Just Ignore What Was Said
and Greet The Day

---- Instrumental Interlude ----
seems To Me
you Don't Wanna Talk About It
seems To Me
you Just Turn Your Pretty Head
and Walk Away

i've Got To Cool Myself Down
stompin' Around
thinking Some Words I Can't Name Ya
meet You Halfway
got Nothin' To Say
still I Don't 'spose I Can Blame Ya

seems To Me
you Don't Wanna Talk About It
seems To Me
you Just Turn Your Pretty Head
and Walk Away
walk Away
walk Away

Let's now see what K.C. does with the extra $12.4 mil. Let's see; put in CDs or treasury bonds?

January 19, 2011  02:45 PM ET

Finally an athlete that has some sense. This is a great story and maybe some other athletes will realize that money isn't everything. Not to say he hasn't made a lot of money but has the decency to know when he can't compete at the level he wants to and can walk away with his head held high.
