Young: Mets poised for Padre-like season

08:15 AM ET 01.21 | Chris Young is taking some San Diego sunshine to Queens. [Young] mostly was a witness to the Padres' surprising run in the NL West last season, making just one start in April and three more in September because of recurring shoulder problems. But the former All-Star hurler -- whose incentive-filled, one-year contract with the Mets was finalized Thursday -- spoke encouragingly about being more involved in a similar run in Flushing in 2011. ... "San Diego was picked to finish last, and maybe lose close to 100 games, by a lot of experts, and the team overachieved. Based on what I've seen here, this team has the same type of chemistry."

And I'm poised to finally get a tan and breed Scarlett Johansson. But I guess if Chris Young means that the Mets are poised to be like the 2010 Padres, I can accept that. Seeing how San Diego FAILED and let the division lead get away from them. Same old Mets.
Nothing to see here. Move along.

At least they actually made a move to get what they need, pitching. Not enough and not good enough, but they are at least focusing on their needs.

As much as I hate to agree with anyone, I'll continue that trend here. Pitching was not their issue last year. It was hitting with RISP.
Although I'll partially agree that they needed pitching with Santana out probably for the year.

Yes, the Padre's season played out in typical Mets fashion perfectly last year. I'm in favor of a return to the norm. It's kind of sad to see the Mets be the NL East.**** the entire season. Leave that to the Marlins and Nationals. Their fan bases have already adjusted to that fact.

They've tried the Dominicans and then the White Stiffs. Surely they could have a tryout in the South Bronx and try some darker options.

It's good to strive to be the Padres.

Lets not forget about a little thing called The Philadelphia Phillies who are the heavy favorites to win the World Series this year....the season is a mere formality and if anybody besides them wins the whole thing it will be an upset.

I do not like their rotation, it needs help after Santana. Pelfrey showed good signs last year, but i don't trust the other guys, though a few showed promise. I think their rotation needed/needs help.
Santana is out for the year? Oh they are screwed. think D'Backs not Pads.

If by mere formality you mean hoping that amazing rotation that includes $70 million dollars in salary to 3 pitchers with a history of back problems. then yea....mere formality.
Although them beating the Mets this year is most certainly a formality.

Yeah, why play the season. I mean the Braves didn't win every season with Smoltz, Glavine and Maddux. Wait.

Young is thinking wishfully. The Padres last year had good, young pitching. The Mets do not. Also, the Mets have a bunch of highly-paid underachievers such as Reyes, Beltran and Bay. The Padres did not. The Mets best-case scenario is third place, and with the Nationals' young talent on the way, they are quite possibly looking at last place jin 2012.

They battled up until the end though. That long losing streak pretty much snuffed out their chances.

umm, my understanding is that the mets clubhouse has some of the worst chemistry in the league. lots of guys who are content to collect a paycheck. isn't everyone saying that's why they have all this talent and still can't win ballgames?
