10:14 AM ET 01.22 | To nobody's great surprise, standout offensive tackle recruit Christian Westerman of Chandler, Ariz., has backed off his nonbinding verbal commitment to the Longhorns and announced he will sign with Auburn next week. Ranked by 247sports as the No. 3 offensive lineman in the country in the class of 2011 and the No. 13 overall prospect, Westerman had pledged to Texas last year. But after the Longhorns' 5-7 season and the retirement of offensive line coach Mac McWhorter, Westerman's commitment softened and he recently took an official visit to Auburn.

Looks to me like the PAC 10 lost him to UTx before UTx lost him to Aubie. Maybe he's working his way east and will stop in the Big Least or ACC before he jumps into the Atlantic Ocean.!

We thank you from the bottom of our SEC hearts. Now if some of them would just come to the Vols or Commodores.......

I am not so sure next year will be much different than this year. Take a look at the Big 12 south and who is returning and tell me who they will overtake. Aggies will be a top 20 team, OU is top 5, OSU will be good, Baylor improved. I don't see them making much improvement from this past year.

Truth to this. But also he may have wanted to play in the SEC, a better chance at playing time early, etc. Maybe he likes Auburn's offense versus whatever Texas tried to run this past year.

Could be right King. UTx was awful this year...but the entire Big 12 really wasn't very good either...IMO. Some teams will be improved as you state but they still have a long way to go. As bad as UTx was, they are not as far behind as they should be. Zero U may have to carry the entire conference.

King, I agree, but IMO I think the BIG 12 will be a hell of a lot better this year than last year. OU, OSU and Texas Tech will be better as will Texas.

I'm sure that didn't hurt but I think it more has to do with the fact that he spends his summers about an hour from Auburn with his grandparents. I don't think this is the case of a naive kid. He just didn't trust Texas was going in a good direction after Mack's shake-up and Auburn's familiar and in need of an OL.

I was skeptical when the kid COMMITTED to TEXAS 8-10 months ago but he building a relationship with AUBURN at the same time. To me, this was a decision pushed by family more than him. It is funny that JEFF GRIMES has a FACEBOOK with 48 people which ALOT of them are HS KIDS who have or still uncommitted for the season. Nevertheless, he is 18 yrs old. Good Luck....advice to you: DON'T COMMIT to a GIRL but decide to FRIEND OTHER GIRLS....BEHIND HER BACK. Your press conference was nothing but a stunt!

Good comment. However most of them are naive IMO. They're 18 year olds.
It doesn't matter how good they are in high school it still takes 1-2 years to develop the strength and technique to start at the next level. The same can be said for jumping to the next level after that (NFL). Coming out of high school it's hard to say where these kids are on the development curve because they're so young. Some 4/5* kids keep improving others plateau.
TX will be OK it's not like they're thin at OL recruits.
