Why A-Rod refused Yankees meeting

Alex Rodriguez wants to stay a Yankee -- albeit after proving his open-market value -- and has gone out of his way to make it possible for the Yankees to climb down from their posturing and match any offer. If the Dodgers can afford to pay the $32 million a year, can the Yankees -- the richest franchise in sports -- plead poverty? Now we understand why Rodriguez did not meet with the Yankees or return their calls. He did not want to give the Yankees an opening to make him a good offer, leaking the details to the news media.

As long as Alex Rodriguez plays in the Bronx, the Yankees will not win the World Series. Accordingly, I strongly urge the Yankees to open up their check books and pay the man!

While we're at it, are there any 48 year old future Hall of Fame pitchers available? They really ought to bring back Randy Johnson and Roger Clemens. And, how about signing Tom Glavine to a $20 million per year, 2 year deal? Maybe Jose Rijo is planning another comeback. The Yankees could probably get him for $4 million a year.

My point is that the chemistry in NY has been bad, especially since Alex Rodriguez arrived. Too many leaders/egos and not enough guys who just shut up and play.

I hope you sign Rodriguez.

oh im glad you didnt have a blatently biased opinion my friend

Whatever. The Yankees do have pride and A-Rod's "tactic" will backfire. He stuck his thumb in management's eye and now wants them to apologize by accepting someone else's offer of his worth. I don't think so. If the Yankees go back on their public position now then they have no shame. As a Red Sox fan, I'm obliged to hate but respect the Yankees. If they sign A-Rod now all I'll feel is disgust.

I'm not an economist or a financial wizard, but, why would the Yankees want to pay more than they had to? Just becasue they were stupid for who knows how many absurd contracts before does that mean they have to keep being stupid? I haven't theard the Yankees cry poverty once during this whole fiasco. Brian Cashman has said it wouldn't make sense to sign him without the Texas discount and that is all I ever recall about the money. That's not crying poverty that's using your freaking common sense. No where does it say in the Baseball bylaws, "Oh yeah the Yankees must pay more than everybody else, especially for ARod." If LA wants to offer the fool 34 mil or whatever number was used fine let them. Why would the Yankees be spiteful (the articles word not mine) if they let him walk away and go to another team? That's what free agency is all about isn't it? They make an offer and then we make an offer, right? If either party doesn't like the offer then you part ways, right? But, in this case there was a special clause that gave one of the partys the right to negotaite without any compettion. Who wrote that in there? Not the Yankees. But the jester agent didn't want his client to even listen to any offers during this time period so had his client opt out before the end of that grace period, (and allowed the announcement to leak during the WORLD SERIES!). In poker this is called a possible bluff. The refusal is the counter bluff. So far it appears as if the Yankees aren't bluffing how ever. (Good.) I offer that one arguement does not follow from the other in this article. The author is a law expert and just let me say I am glad he isn't arguing law for me, because the stretch in his logic and the desperation of his thinking, I might add, is almost nonsensical. Did Boras hire his guy? Because this reeks of damage control.

payrod, go away. go play in japan, take boras the ^hat with you too.

November 4, 2007  08:33 AM ET

Let us assume the Sox re-sign Lowell. What other 3B would the Yankees be looking at? Other than the possibility of trading a ton for an Atkins (who Colorado may not be willing to pay for) or Cabrera (the same), they're going to be calling Luis Sojo back.

The Yankees don't rebuild, they reload. The problem with the current market is that their reloading options are VERY limited. AROD knows it, Boras (the clown) knows it and the Yankees know it. I feel the Yankees know what they are willing to spend for AROD, and if the market dictates that same price they may get back in the bidding war.

I'm tired of all the "the Yankees won't win a world series with AROD" garbage. THE YANKEES WOULDN'T HAVE MADE THE PLAYOFFS WITHOUT HIM THIS YEAR. I recommend turning your attention to the geriatric unit, namely their starting pitching and re-evaluate the problems there. They have some young talent they are not willing to part with. They have some old contracts they are stuck with; let the old-heads walk.

November 4, 2007  08:48 AM ET

GOOD BYE TO TO PAY ROD AND BORASSSSSSSSSSS. BETEMIT WILL FILL THE 3rd BASE HOLE JUST FINE. HE CAN HIT/FIELD WITH 90% + OF THE 3rd BASEMEN PLAYING, WE DO NOT, I REPEAT WE DO NOT NEED CREDE FROM THE CHISOX. TRADE DAMON FOR SOME PITCHING.

November 4, 2007  09:24 AM ET

I wouldn't sign A-Rod to a 10 year contract for a National League team. Somewhere down the line I expect he will need to play DH, at least some of the time.

If A-Rod really wanted to stay with the Yankees, Boras made a disasterous decision to opt out before listening to their contract extension proposal. Now he will get stuck somewhere where he won't fit it, possibly at a lower price.

The posturing was done by Boras!! Not the Yankees. Who stuck out all the nonsense in the media? And who alienated the Yankees by opting out? If A-Rod and Boras expect the Yankees to forgive the abuse of the situation by Boras and A-Rod they are overlooking the resolve of the Steinbrenners.

F A-Rod.

November 4, 2007  10:33 AM ET

I didn't know that Scott Boras was a ghostwriter for the Times.

November 4, 2007  10:35 AM ET

If A-Rod performed at the level of a minor leaguer in the post-season with the Yankees, then he would get whatever he wanted, but good teams are scared of his tendancy to choke. He will go back to a team like Texas, where it does not matter. He can go back to being a stat machine...yipee.

November 4, 2007  10:57 AM ET

Rodriguez hasn't said anything. This is the Times talking. Yesterday there was this $350M for a sit-down. I contend that A Rod wants out of New York. He will stay if they meet his insane demands. Problem is $21M of his curent contract was being paid by the Rangers. His opting out lets them off the hook. He can kiss the Yankees good-bye.

Yeah, funny how no one points to the pitching staff for the playoff woes...going into this postseason, the Yanks starting pitching during the postseason when ARod was on the team, was 2-8 with a collective ERA over 6. Wang made those numbers even worse this offseason...wanna know why the Yanks haven't won the World Series during ARod'sime in NY? Starting pitching...
