Sox considering Damon trade?

With Joe Crede recently cleared to perform baseball work, the White Sox's trade options for teams seeking third basemen could expand and pave the way for Josh Fields to return to third after playing left field for four weeks last season. One possibility is the New York Yankees, who could make leadoff batter/outfielder Johnny Damon available after picking up the $16 million option on Bobby Abreu.

Probably a good deal for the Yankees. Damon's not getting younger and his aggressive playing style seems to be catching up with him. Damon has said at times his enthusiasm is waning, a new team might rekindle the spark but could also convince him to move on to other things.

Yes, if there is a God in heaven, please, let this be. (Just kidding, God about that "if" part, but a little help here would be appreciated.)

Am I the only person that doesnt get why Johnny Damon is such a sought after player? He swings like an idiot and is old and hurt and not very good

November 4, 2007  08:39 AM ET

No, no ,no. Johnny goood. Johnny needs a change of scenery. Johnny goes to the other Sox team, yes.

November 4, 2007  08:50 AM ET

He's sought after because he's got a cannon. (He has an above average arm..for a 12 year old.)

A change of scenery would definitely re-ignite Johnny's career. definitely. I don't feel the same way for Crede. Johnny for some pitching is probably best for all parties.

Crede is a really key part of the White Sox. Both in the field and at the plate in clutch situations. They really missed him last year. The big problem is Crede is injury prone. Josh Fields has pretty good potential but will he pan out? If the Yankees throw in a prospect and an established, effective middle reliever, I could see this deal happening.

hummm, both Damon and Crede are Boras' client.

November 4, 2007  09:39 AM ET

Thankfully he's not the Red Sox's problem anymore. If he gets traded to the White Sox, will his long hair and beard resurface?

Please let this trade happen. Please.

i don't like this trade. Crede's great defensively but offensively...not so much. i'll take Betemit's offensive potential.

however, if A-Rod somehow comes back, i'd love Betemit to be the opening day starter at 1B in a platoon with Shelley Duncan. at the same time, though, if there were any interesting trade offers for Shelley, i'd defintiely listen.

I'm a White Sox fan and Crede for Damon is a no deal in my book. I know Crede has a contract coming up but hold out for something better than Damon. And Crede is better offensively than the above poster thinks. in 2006 he had 30 homers and 94 RBI's. And he was one of the only Sox hitters that was hitting in the 7th, 8th, and 9th innings when it counted.

GARRETT ATKINS
Eligible for arbitration. Made $400,000 this year. Not eligible for free agency until after after 2010 season.
2007 season: .301 average, 25 homers and 111 RBI.
2006 season:.329-29-120 line.
Below-average range at hot corner, but has steady hands and a good arm. Top prospect Ian Stewart is ready for the majors after a September call-up. Rockies have talked about moving Stewart to second base, but might prefer to get a young pitcher for Atkins instead.
Righthanded bat would help balance lineup for the Yanks and he'd be under team control for three years. Wouldn't have to give up as much as they would to get Cabrera.
MIGUEL CABRERA
Eligible for arbitration. Made $7.4 million this year after winning arbitration case. Not eligible for free agency until after 2009 season.
2007 season: Set career highs with 34 homers and 119 RBI, but on-base percentage slipped to .401 after .430 mark in 2006. Made 23 errors, tied for second-most in National League.
Basically he is pricing himself out of the Marlins' range, and Florida would like to get something for him now before he beomes arent a player in his walk year. Work ethic seems to be an issue, and he's had multiple dustups with teammates.
For the Yanks he is the closest they can come to replacing A-Rod's bat and he's only 24. But the Marlins are won't let him leave chaeply because he has already been selected to four All-Star teams and won a World Series.
JOE CREDE:
Contract status: Eligible for arbitration. Made $4.9 million this year on one-year contract that avoided arbitration. Eligible for free agency after 2008 season.
2007 season: Limited to 47 games by back injury that required surgery, hit just .216 with four homers and 22 RBI. Won the Silver Slugger award over A-Rod in 2006!!!!
Josh Fields hit 23 homers in 100 games at third base, and some say htis hand shi mthe jobat third for next year and gives Crede a ticket to ride. Warning, wearning Will Robinson!!!!! A Scott Boras client, Crede will test the free-agency after 2008.
For the Yanks Crede is a one-year stopgap. he should come cheap, also. But next year the Yanks will need t oshop for another third baseman.

So, which way do you move if you are Brian CAshman? Let the bargaining begin and the chips fall where they may.
