A night that was meant for nostalgia and good times turned scary for the Islanders last night when franchise goaltender Rick DiPietro was struck in the right eye by Sidney Crosby's stick in the second period during Al Arbour Night at the Coliseum. DiPietro did not return to the game. DiPietro was taken to an eye doctor's office for evaluation. Coach Ted Nolan said Crosby's stick made contact with DiPietro's eye. The Islanders did not know the extent of the injury.

Not good at all!

November 4, 2007  09:16 AM ET

Sidney Crosby is a pigheaded and incredibly dirty player.

November 4, 2007  10:15 AM ET

Well the guy only has 13 years left on his deal. Hopefully he's fine.

November 4, 2007  11:05 AM ET

i dont get why the masks allows enough room for a stick to get through

November 4, 2007  11:06 AM ET

Not good, indeed. The Isles were doing pretty OK for a team everyone deemed lost for years to come. Now...

November 4, 2007  01:21 PM ET

Burn him at the stake then !!

November 4, 2007  01:24 PM ET

One of the Isles D-men lifted Crosbys stick up with his causing Sids stick to whip up and catch DiPietro. They call a penalty on those because they feel they must...but it was due to an Isles player. Freak thing. Hopefully he'll be OK.

Looking forward to Sid skewering the Flyers as always Popcorn?

I'm surprised this kind of injury doesn't happen once a shift! I can't believe some players don't even wear mouth pieces, let alone half-shields or visors. The fact that the most padded and protected player on the ice caught a stick to the eye should tell you something about hockey's many risks. This particular play had no dirty or careless intentions, just a fact of hockey life. No worries, just pick up your credibility and dust it off, Popcorn... There's always tomorrow.

This guy is injury prone. This was a freak accident, but most of his injuries are weird. What else can you say.

November 4, 2007  06:03 PM ET

Hey Jaznep, um, you didn't catch that I was JOKING???? Crosby is the 3rd best ever to step on the ice.

November 5, 2007  08:24 AM ET

It wasn't crosbys fault his stick was lifted ( I forget which player) into Dipietro.

November 5, 2007  11:35 AM ET

its alot easier to take games off because of this kind of stuff when your contract is guaranteed forever...

November 5, 2007  11:56 AM ET

col. i,ll admit that that crossby is good. if you,re going gretzky, then orr as 1&2 respectively, there are way too many hall of famers that had great years consecutively that i would put ahead of him.to name a few there,s howe, dionne, richard, bossy, hull, etc. i won,t even consider him to be in this same league of players until he,s had at least 5 years in the league.where do you have our bobby clarke? hell, even tim kerr had his 50 goal years, and most powerplay goals in a season, that i would take over the kid at this point.GOOOOOOOOOOOO FLYERS.

Is Capt. Dive-a-Lot going to be suspended???

November 5, 2007  02:57 PM ET

Alright, this talk about Crosby not being a good player is just CRAZY talk!! The kid is 20, and he has already accomplished play that even Gretzky and Orr would dream about so please don't even start comparing him to other players. And I wouldn't even put him in the same league as Clarke and Kerr, because the kid is soooooooo much better than those guys!! I admire the Passion of the Philly fans who posted here but please, be real. Clarke vs. Crosby, what a joke!! And if you are going to compare Clarke and Kerr with Crosby than compare their first two seasons with Crosby???s first two seasons!!!! You???ll find that their really is no comparison because their numbers are a joke compared to Crosby???s!

November 5, 2007  03:14 PM ET

DiPietro folks! this thread is about DiPietro! Why am I reading about Crosby all of a sudden? Before I start getting flamed, realize that I am neither bashing or putting Crosby in a pedestal though I'll admit that I'll choose him for my team any day over everybody in the HOF but gretzky and orr.

November 5, 2007  03:18 PM ET

It is funny this article comes from NY and it makes NO mention that his stick was lifted and it wasn't his fault. GO FIGURE. Be mad your team signed an injury prone goalie for a million years.

November 5, 2007  05:22 PM ET

Capt.Dive-a-lot? Too bad you don't get the chance to watch him play. You would notice one of the hardest working players in the NHL stay on his skates enough to lead the league in scoring....on his way to the Hart trophy last year.

November 5, 2007  06:46 PM ET

My apologies. We should be talking about Crosby, but I guess it goes to show just how valuable this kid is in the NHL. Let's see, what can I say about DiPietrio.....Hmmmmm.... not much!!! Next posting!

A Flyers fan calling someone else's player a dirty player....that's funny..
