Wells move smacks of desperation

08:25 AM ET 01.24 | If the Angels are competing for the baseball headlines in the Los Angeles market, it remains to be seen whether Friday's trade will eventually help. Owner Arte Moreno sees this as a crucial time to grab market share, particularly with the Dodgers reeling because of the McCourts' divorce proceedings. ... It's a massive risk, but, who knows, it might be worth a roll of the dice. The Angels' top prospect and one of the best prospects in baseball is center fielder Mike Trout, 19. By the time he's ready to force his way into the Angels' every-day lineup, Wells could slide gracefully into one of the corners. Wells and Torii Hunter would be nice mentors for Trout as he tries to get his feet under him in the major leagues. You can make plenty of arguments in favor of Friday's move, but it certainly had the air of desperation.

Seemed like a good swap to me, in terms of what they'll both get as far as performance goes. Angels picked up about 11 million in salary on the deal and don't have a great catcher that I know of to fill the hole that was left, so maybe they got the short end of the stick at the end of the day.

From everything I have read, the Jays are not sending any cash. They picked up 11 million from the angels so that was their cash considerations. They get two decent players, but no top prospect in exchange for an all-star OF with a huge contract.

I've heard the Jays included no cash too.
I think it is a terrible trade for the Angels. They are not going to get anywhere near $86M of production out of Wells. His average season over the past FOUR years is .270, 20 HR, 78 RBI. And now they will get him from age 32 through 35. You honestly think he's going to do better now???

I think that if the Jays had thrown in $30M and traded him for a minor league catcher, that the receiving team would have been hosed.

All Angel fans can hope for is that the move sparks some good play out of him. I'm still shaking my head at this trade, we could've done better.

ANGELS DESPERATION, it didn't matter which way the angels search for a better player, whatever the halos did this off season it just fall apart right in from of this franchise, but then there is always next winter, perhaps the angels would have better luck!!!

Wells is a better fit then Beltre. Beltre plays well during contract years and that is it. Wells is a solid player. Napoli not even a loss, he strikes out WAY too much!

Napoli was one of the better hitters on the Angels. Way better than Mathis.
Beltre was a better fit for the Angels because Brandon Wood was the second LEAST valuable player in all of baseball last year.

I don't agree with this statement at all. Wells gives the Angels a power hitting player and above average OF. They gave up "spare parts" to get him so I say BRAVO to the Angels !!!

I'd like to see what happens when Wells moves from HR friendly Toronto to the thick evening air in Anaheim. My prediction is he will hit about .270 with 15 HRs and 75 RBIs..... and the media will kill Moreno for making this deal.

There's a reason why Toronto traded Wells for spare parts.

Vernon hit .321 at home last year with 20 home runs, 54 rbi's. On the road, .227 with 11 homers and 34 rbi's in more plate appearances. He has always played well at roger's centre, but it's been years since he had success on the road.
I think he is a much better outfielder than being advertised. he has lost that much speed, despite his size, and there are few players that take straight lines to the ball like him, EVER. Angel fans will enjoy his defense this year.
Classy guy, and sad to see him go, but think it was time they split ways. Hope he has success with the Angels, but I'm interested to see how he plays away from the dome. Never really lived up to the hype offensively tho, had one really good year batting in front of Delgado, but has been ordinary ever since. It's awesome that AA got 2 players and we're not paying any of his salary. That was the shocker.
