08:25 AM ET 01.24 | Process of elimination finds Jorge Cantu down to the Padres and Indians. Despite overtures from [Cantu], which the Braves gave some consideration, they decided not to pursue the free agent infielder as another piece for their bench, according to a Braves official. Cantu is looking for an every-day job, either at first base or third, and the Braves don???t have openings at either spot. ... He was traded from the Marlins to the Rangers last July where he moved to the bench and stayed there throughout a run to the World Series. In a published report Sunday, Cantu said he was in talks with the Braves, Padres, and Indians after his discussions ended with the Houston Astros.

Well, if you listen to FN meatball "Innocent Bystander," Cantu will make a great replacement for Adrian Gonzalez.

Then again, who listens to Innocent Bystander?

January 24, 2011  10:20 AM ET

yep ... another great trade that worked out so **** well for the Rangers ... him and Francoeur were such great late season pickups for the Rangers ...

you know, I'm beginning to wonder how they made it to the WS ...

Cantu's stats have fallen off the cliff the last couple of years. That leaves him with the AAAA teams like Cleveland or teams that don't have quality position players like the Padres.

I would have to disagree...

Cantu put up Very Solid numbers in '08 & '09 (95 + 100 RBI's with some pop) - I know this cause I've had him on my Fantasy squads :-)

Last year, he fell off a cliff after the trade and got 100 AB's in the last 65 or so games....

He did come up as a Second Baseman... So I'm surprised the Mets aren't sniffing around - unless they are dedicated to Luis Castillo (last year of his contract).

Apparently you do. But I compared Cantu to Alberto Callaspo.

You compared Alberto Callaspo to Jesus Christ.

Who's the idiot?

If I'm his agent my battle cry is if you need a "CAN DO" then get "CANTU" !!!

I stand corrected. His HRs dropped in 2009 to 16 and his overall numbers dropped in 2010. At the point of the trade (127 games played), he had over 400 ABs and was hitting .260 with 54 RBIs. But, he is only 28, so theoretically he could be a good, cheap buy for someone with lots of potential upside. Part of me would have liked to have had the Braves pick him up, knowing that Chipper is going to get hurt, suck or both. And Freeman is a rookie, so he could be a nice insurance policy at both corners. But I know their needs are elsewhere & after signing Uggla long term, they have to use their dollars wisely.

The guy has a decent bat, but has an average glove at best.
