Cubs set up for Pujols pitch?

08:20 AM ET 01.27 | Recent moves in New York, Boston, Los Angeles and Chicago may shed some light on the inner workings of where and when Albert Pujols signs a long-term deal. Would the fact that the Yankees and Boston Red Sox presumably will have reached long-term deals with first basemen Mark Teixeira and Adrian Gonzalez inhibit Pujols' market? ... Conversely, would the Cardinals' refusal to guarantee Pujols a nine- or 10-year contract be tested next winter by the Chicago Cubs' entry into the sweepstakes? The Cubs' ability to sign free agent first baseman Carlos Pena to a one-year deal this offseason allowed them the dexterity to try to overwhelm Pujols or, failing that, to at least force their division rival to go well beyond its allocated means to retain him.

And playing first base ... for the chicgo cubs ... Albert Pujols. ROFL what an incredible PR coup that would be for the cubs. To take agruably the greatest Cardinal of all time away from St Louis.

There have been some great Cardinal players...
... Pujols can be mentioned with them, but not the greatest in my view.

Sorry, I don't know Albert, but I refuse to think he would go to the Cubs (a perennial non playoff team) because he would make $300 million instead of $280 million with the Cards ( a yearly playoff threat).

If Pujols signs a huge deal with the Cubs, he'll blow out both knees in the first month of his contract.

The Cardinals cannot let Pujols go anywhere, if that means trading other stars like Holliday or Carpenter to free up the salary they have to do it. 9-10 yrs would not even been a problem for me with this type of guy... he'll still be great 10 years from now.

As a Cubs fan, I must agree. If he were to sign with the cubs, he would either blow out both knees or be hit by a bus.

He's obviously not Stan the Man...yet. I say he continues what he is doing, when it's all said and done he will be right there with Musial or surpass him as the greatest Card ever.

First off...Pujols is only getting a 9yr deal if StL gives him less money over the life of the contract.
No player at the age of 31 is worthy of a 9yr deal.
After 35 he will not be the same man...period.
I am all for giving Al his money, but sadly, once he gets his 30mil per season, StL will be so cash strapped in seasons to come that their best hope for winning a title is their farm system.
Signing other big names to play with him will be virtually impossible.

And sadly, the recent track record of developing players in their own system is very, very poor.

It would be their payback for Lou Brock and to a lesser degree Bruce Sutter..............but it's still not going to happen.

Would the Cubs or Cards be that dumb as to sign Pujols for nine or ten years for 30 million a year? I don't think so. If they do, this trend of paying players too much for too many years will be officially out of control. Fans won't even be able to afford what are now the most affordable seats.

Maybe offensively...

Overally, I select Bob Gibson as the "greatest" Cardinal.
