Wrong ball blamed for FG return

Vikings kicker Ryan Longwell thought he had the distance to kick a career-long 57-yarder at the end of the first half. But he was duped by the old-switcheroo - or lack thereof. "They put a quarterback ball in," Longwell said, referring to the different balls used in the game. "They didn't put a K ball in the game." The K ball was introduced in 1999, to prevent kickers from breaking balls in too much. But those balls differ from the other ones because they're more broken in. "The quarterbacks' (ball) are a little bit tackier and have better grip," Longwell said. "Obviously, the K ball was flying pretty well today." Longwell's field-goal kick, which would have put the Vikings up 14-7 at halftime, came up just short. It was returned an NFL-record 109 yards by Antonio Cromartie for a touchdown. "You don't think about giving up a return like that," Longwell said. "When you've got a guy like that against linemen, and snappers and kickers, I mean, he's got good odds."

I am in San Diego and I watched the game. He is complaining about not making a kick that is longer than he has made before. Sounds like sour grapes. Cromartie holds a record 109 yard 32 inch return of a SHORT field goal kick for a touchdown. This record will never be broken - you can't hardly get closer to the rear boundary line.

Congrats to the Viking RB for his record - that rookie is good.

he ran unbelievably, Peterson did. The Cromartie run was exciting and unexpected, but the real story wasa Peterson dominating the single game rushing record. A rookie. Against a defence that is supposed to be pretty respectable. Unreal. I watched the game - mostly wishing beforehand that I had the NFL package so I could watch another game. I sure don't regret it now, it was a beauty

The Packer would not pay him the $ to stay in GreenBay beacuse all he did was say the snap was low the hold was bad.Everyones fault but Wrongwells!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

November 5, 2007  08:25 AM ET

How does he know it was the wrong ball, did he get close enough to read which ball it was as Cromartie ran past him..If he was that close he should have tackled him...LOL

November 5, 2007  08:32 AM ET

That was just redonkulas. I think the Vikes were stunned. Seems like someone should have gotten close enough to get a hand on him, but there was a bunch of stading around looking. He Vikes, listen for the whistle. That means you can stand around and look. If you don;t hear it, keep running. Sheesh. AP is just a beast.

The balls are clearly marked: "Right Ball" and "Wrong Ball" Unfortunately, what was not marked so clearly was "good field goal team" and "bad field goal team". The bad one was on the field for that kick.

three major records in 1 game, most yards rushing, longest return, and most 200 yard rushing games by a rookie.

wow. serious game in san diego. you all need to name that game something..

If,if,if.... if my aunt had balls, she'd be my uncle....

November 5, 2007  09:29 AM ET

Wahhhh......

Learn how to takle and this wont be a problem.

November 5, 2007  09:56 AM ET

Just make the darn field goal!

November 5, 2007  10:06 AM ET

Easier said than done, Cheesedaddy. It was a 57 yarder. I can understand why Longwell would be slightly PO'd, but if the special teams had done its job and tackled Cromartie, this wouldn't even be a topic of discussion.

November 5, 2007  10:15 AM ET

Yeah, and the sun was in his eyes and the wind was blowing in the metro-dome. wahhhhhhh

November 5, 2007  10:23 AM ET

how much does a field goal kicker have to do along the sidelines? he can't pick out the ball he wants to kick himself and make sure he has the right ball? if that's not his job, he should have made it so. it's his own fault. wrong ball can be blamed for the miss, not for the return.

November 5, 2007  10:30 AM ET

He didn't have time for that. Had just put a load of jockstraps in the washer

November 5, 2007  10:49 AM ET

Good Old Ryan Shortwell making excuses again when he misses. It was always someone elses fault when he played in Green Bay when he'd miss and now it continues in Minnesota. Hey Ryan Applebees has a spot reserved for you since it's the only nice place to eat in Green Bay.

November 5, 2007  10:58 AM ET

Okay, first off...ALL of the balls used should be the same. There should be no QB balls and Kicker balls. That's yet another reason most people hate kickers.

"wow. serious game in san diego. you all need to name that game something.." -pw

Actually it was in Minnesota...
