Locker stands by expensive decision

08:06 AM ET 01.28 | Staying in school likely cost Jake Locker millions. Locker probably would have been a top-five pick in the draft if he had turned pro after his junior season. Instead, he had a disappointing senior year and he might rank as only the fourth best quarterback in the 2011 NFL Draft. "By going back, I graduated," Locker said after a North team practice. "I got my degree. We won the Holiday Bowl. I finished what I set out to [do] when I committed to the University of Washington. Staying in school was everything expected. I wouldn't change anything about it." Locker nevertheless could use a good showing in Saturday's all-star game and at the NFL Scouting Combine workouts in February.

With no guarantee of a next season...this is a good move.

Frankly, senior season aside, I would be more inclined to use a pick on him if I needed a QB due to the fact he seems to make smart decisions and follows through on what he says. That shows some leadership skills that many teams are sorely lacking.

"only the fourth best quarterback in the 2011 NFL Draft"
I don't see a problem with that - especially when half the teams are trying to figure out what to do at the QB spot.

"We won the Holiday Bowl."
Well, that makes it ALL worthwhile. Million and millions of dollars can't touch that!

Locker already has a much higher set of skills than any QBs on the Bills, Raiders, Panthers, Cardinals, or Vikings' rosters (to name a few teams).

A player with integrity in the NFL......imagine that. However with a rookie cap on the horizon I'm not to sure about how smart it was.

At least we know he is smart enough to stay in school and finish his degree. There will be life after football for him.

The same thing seems to be happening to him that happened to Matt Leinert, at least from the standpoint of being drafted. But something tells me Locker will fare better in the long run than Leinert.

He'll realize his dream and make his money with a college degree.

Unless his degree is in Alchemy that was a bad call. With the kind of money he passed up he wouldn't need a job after football.

And likely to a decent team that will have a chance to be playoff bound sooner rather than later. Good deal, I say.

I don't have a problem with guys going back to school, but I do question their commitment to the game. Locker, Leinart, and now Luck all would have been top 3 picks, if not all #1's if they came out when their names were the hottest. Isn't that what your ultimate goal is when you are starting for a major college program, ESPECIALLY as a QB?
The only guy that I really get with staying is Leinart. He was into the celebrity side of things and the extra year of college allowed him to be a "rockstar".

This is the only area that I see an advantage. The guy doesn't have to go become a savior. He will likely go to a team that is semi-established. No matter how talented the QB is, he will fail if you don't have a good offensive line.
