Rays may put ace on market

04:28 AM ET 11.05 | An executive familiar with Tampa's thinking said if the offers for Johan Santana grow to a substantial level, then the Rays would test to see what they could get for Scott Kazmir. The thinking is that because Kazmir is three years from free agency as opposed to one year for Santana, he might bring nearly as much in return. The Rays need multiple high-end pitchers, and Kazmir, just about to enter arbitration eligibility for the first time, might be too expensive and ready to depart just as Tampa is projecting contention in two to three years.

Rays would probably get a nice complimenting bat for Kazmir.

I think that would be a good move for the devil Rays .That would probably help their team out if they get good players in return.

If I was a GM, I think I would be more excited to acquire Kazmir than Santana.
Santana is going to cost 20-25 million for several years after next season, while Kazmir is under the club's control for 3 more seasons and signing him to an extension would take less money. Not to mention he will only be 24 next season.

Bring him back, Omar.

November 5, 2007  09:11 AM ET

if they could get 3 #3 starters I would take it
gettin 3 consistant pitchers in that rotation would do a lot for their pitching staff

Maybe the Mets can undo their past mistake and get him back. Then again if he hits the market expect a lot of teams and their GM's to be ready with offers because as stated he is 3 years from free agency and only 24 years old. Santana will find many suitors but those teams need to understand that he may only be a 1 year rental and even if he does resign with that team it will cost a very hefty sum to retain his services. If Zito was able to get $17M a year imagine what Santana can ask for and probably receive.

I wouldn't mind seeing him in a World Series Champs Boston Red Sox uniform and then we could let Schilling go.

November 5, 2007  10:11 AM ET

Kazmir looks like he's developing into a nice young pitcher and all, but I don't think the Red Sox need him. They have plenty of young pitching talent (Buchholz, Lester, Masterson).

He does need to cut down on his walks. He allowed the 3rd most in the AL last year, and his WHIP was 1.38. If he can improve his control, he'll be a very special player.

Beckett, Dice-K, Kazmir, Lester = another BoSox World Series Ring....

SIGN MIKE LOWELL.!!!!.....

November 5, 2007  10:16 AM ET

Not sure if the D-Rays should deal him though. They have a very potent lineup thats FILLED with great young talent (Upton, Crawford, Pena, Young, Baldelli, Iwamura) and have a couple nice prospects (Evan Longoria, David Price).

Nate Silver from baseballprospectus pointed out this could be the 2009 Devil Rays lineup.

LF Carl Crawford

2B B.J. Upton
DH Carlos Pena
3B Evan Longoria
RF Delmon Young
1B Pedro Alvarez
CF Rocco Baldelli
SS Reid Brignac
C Dioner Navarro
SP Scott Kazmir
SP David Price
SP James Shields
SP Jacob McGee
SP Wade Davis
SP Andy Sonnanstine
RP-R Jeff Niemann
RP-L J.P. Howell

That team could contend.

man i still have nightmares about letting the guy go for a bumm who is no longer playing. but there no way we could get him, i dont think many teams have enough pieces to trade, and if they did, they'd keep them anyway. i still hope to pick the guy up in 3 years and beginning righting the many wrongs we have committed.

Jesus and Bob - Peter Kind in today's MMQB says that the Sox are chasing Santana. I can't even begin to think who they'd ask for.

Hyper, connect to the Boston Golbe web page and read the story on the GM meetings. See the article written by Nick Carfado. Some interesting speculation there. Also some news regarding guess who? Yep the fool and the jester and your Sox.

November 5, 2007  10:40 AM ET

I guess that's why the Rays cannot build anything....why wouldn't they try and lock him up?

November 5, 2007  10:43 AM ET

Thanks, 4192.
