Goalie ends Leafs controversy
For the first time since August, you won't hear about a Maple Leafs goaltending controversy. Vesa Toskala has closed debate with a six-game run that ended Saturday night with a 32-save, 3-2 win in Montreal. During that two-week span, the Finn has won three, lost two in regulation and another in a shootout.

he's a good goalie with a bad defence. His numbers are never going to look good enough for his contract on that team, but he keep the Leafs in their games more often than not, even with McCabe and company trying their best to make sure the Leafs get the first pick overall this next draft. The defence on that team is as bad as any team's D we have seen since the early 80s when the Oilers were spanking teams and there were no defensive schemes like there are today. I'd take this guy as my goalie any day...Leafs fans just need to open their eyes that its not Toskala, its the rest of the team, that costs this group wins

Toskala is a good goaltender. Not great, but a definite improvement over Raycroft. The one thing Leaf fans have to get used to is there is no Cujo or Belfour in the waiting... golaies that could steal a few games a year by themselves and were very comfortable in behind weak defensive clubs. The Leafs have to get better as a whole, their goaltending will follow. They cannot abandon goalies like they did to the aforementioned players, or they will lose often. The organization got away with drafting badly and not developing a coherent defensive scheme because they were spoiled with three goalies who had stellar years in a Leaf uniform (Potvin, Cujo and the Eagle).

Toskala is a good goalie. He just isn't a good goalie for the Leafs. The Leafs aren't at in a position where they need to be adding a piece here and there - they need to be rebuilding, and I think they would be better off with the draft pick than they are with Toskala.

Good for Toskala. Too bad he plays for a crappy team that doesn't know how to defend their own end. I feel for you my friend!!!

I'm sure he's glad they dont +/- goaltenders or he'd really be regretting signing with this team

Why s this a story? Between this and the Forsberg story, it must be a really slow news/rumour day in hockey. Why don't you throw in a story about how the Preds aren't being sold this week to have a non-news trifecta?!

It really makes no difference who is between the pipes,as long as the Leafs defence(or lack thereof) do not perform up to snuff, they will be hard-pressed to make the playoffs in the East. All it takes is one real bad game and Raycroft will be getting some playing time.Betcha Toskala wishes he was still in San Jose!

I'll bet the Leaf's brass just breathed a sigh of relief. They should have been worried having a $4 M back-up, or co #1. If he keeps getting rubber like he did Saturday night, he might just be burnt out by Christmas. At least McCabe wasn't there to score on him!

Nothing brings a controversy to an end faster than playing well. Too bad his numbers will not reflect his good play with that inept D in front of him. (DC)

As long as there are two goalies in the lineup, there will always be a "controversy" in T.O.!
